2. How do you interpret that line? I've always wondered if KK meant it

to be as cynical as it sounds... :shrug: But, I love Kristofferson

4. I think he meant it more as an optimistic and anti-materialistic

statement (which fit in with the mentality of the time).

He was saying that true freedom is only obtainable when there is nothing to be lost and you are free from worrying about such things. You may not have a lot but you become richer in mind and spirit and free in a way very few can comprehend.

It's comparable to the way Arrested Development describd in Mr. Wendal:

Mr.Wendal has freedom,
a free that you and I think is dumb
Free to be without the worries of a quick to diss society
for Mr.Wendal's a bum
His only worries are sickness
and an occasional harassment by the police and their chase
Uncivilized we call him,
but I just saw him eat off the food we waste
Civilization, are we really civilized, yes or no ?
Who are we to judge ?
When thousands of innocent men could be brutally enslaved
and killed over a racist grudge
Mr.Wendal has tried to warn us about our ways
but we don't hear him talk
