Any Canadian lawyers here?
Let's say I was considering moving Up North, and let's say I have a law degree and am about to pass the California bar but otherwise have no actual lawyering experience other than working for a year and a half as a law clerk in a small civil firm.

What would be my chances of finding work up there, and becoming certified to practice in Canada? Is it hard? I have enough points to be a skilled worker immigrant, but I have all these student loans to think about...

Blech. I hate today.

3. excellent question
I would like an answer to this question too. I'll be graduating from law school in 2006 and might consider moving up north. I would like to work in criminal law. What are the necessary qualifications?

5. You would probably have to do a period of articling
I think there's also the certification fee which is pretty formidable according to my ex g-friend who practiced in LA before coming back to Toronto. But you're lucky on the work visa front. Lawyers are one of the professions NAFTA allows citizens of either country to gain non-immigrant work permits for that can be renewed annually indefinitely with little more than your college degree and a letter of intent for employment. Just have to hunt for the work!
