Can someone explain "SINFEST" to me?
http://www.sinfest.net/index.htm

Where is this guy coming from?

Some cartoons are very...preachy, while others are downright bawdy. Then there's the bits about minorities scattered throughout.

Yet, there's still some wonderfully brilliant pieces on Religion throughout.

What's up with this strip?

(if you haven't read it, read until you get to the point where the Chinese Dragon is fighting with God before you make up your mind on the strip. This strip is a prime case of something you can't get a full feeling for with just a sample. You need to read several weeks worth of the strip before you can see the full range of ideas that the strip covers.)

1. Nope, I'm bewildered too
Read a zillion of them when a buddy showed it to me last year; was as puzzled at the end as at the beginning. Eventually I noticed I wasn't laughing either, and said heck with this.

2. I'm trying to get my head around this guy's sense of humor
And I'm just not getting it.

But for every strip I hate there seems to be one that I think is brilliant.

Just who is he writing for though? Christians who like porn?

My head hurts since I found this stip. It's just weird.

4. He's Writing for Japanese -- His Name is Tatsuya Ishida

That accounts for the strange disconnect between tone and substance.

7. He is not writing for the Japanese
He is writing for the clubkid anime netsavy culture. He is from a Japanese background (or at least aware of the pictographic nature of Kangi and its history). But he is stateside and very much a part of this culture pressed together from a mishmash of cultures.

5. For those people who don't want to go to the trouble of reading a lot
of the strips, here's a few of them that will show the contrast that's in this strip.

6. My fave netonly strip
Sinfest takes some getting used to and some investment to know where he is coming from. He attempts to incorporate most belief systems. He recognises that our natures are not perfection and that we are human. His theological sense seems to be that god is ok with this. He can get a little rough on the atheists at times but he balances this by taking it to the fundies too. He is obviously from the club kid scene and much of his posturing reflects this. Cool stuff. One of the good guys.

8. Sinfest is all about character development.
Whats said isnt really funny by itself, its funny because its just SOOO in character for that particular toon to say it. Sort of like the Simpsons used to be.

If you go back and read a years worth or so, its just soo funny and addictive.
