Non-election related catastrophe involving a possum
Made ya look. :-)

I have an enclosed back porch attached to the back of my brick house. Because of damage due to a huge tree that has been removed, it had lots of roof rot.

Last night, it was raining and the possum that I've seen around frequently apparently was crawling on the roof and fell through, leaving a gaping hole. As I opened the door, I first noticed debris all over a wicker table and loveseat and then I saw him sitting on a chair, just staring at me with his beady eyes.

It took a minute to register. There's an animal on my porch. I screamed an slammed the door shut. It was dark and late, so I let him spend the night.

In the morning, I went around the side of the house from the front and opened the door to let him out. He just stared at me blankly. It was wet and windy outside and he was warm and dry by now.

I left the door open and went and slammed the other door to startle him. It didn't work. I left the door open and checked later. He just stared at me with a look of "I live here now. Leave me alone."

Then, I went to work.

6. I'm not naming him
I have no ill will — although I think he was the one who ate my baby bunnies. The mom had them in the corner of my vegetable garden. I fenced it off with chicken wire and them on the outside.

I used to check on them every day, watching them grow from afar. Then one morning I went to check and there were baby bunny carcasses all over. It was carnage. I was so upset, I had to call my brother to clean it up.

2. We use a live trap
to catch them. Bait with sardines.

Possums = World's Stupidest Creatures
(next to rethuglicans, of course)

I can understand why you freaked out at first...their teeth look quite formidable!

I can't tell you how many times I've seen them by the side of the road, staring right at my headlights several seconds, then stepping directly into the path of my car.

My sympathies...Possum poo stinks terribly!

3. Just leave the door open, he will go outside. You could put some food

and water outside for him, he will go to get it, you don't need a trap.
Or you could just put it on the porch and let him live there.

Possums are nice.

4. Name him, give him something to eat (really, just any old leftovers)
A bowl of water. Give him a wide berth. And a litter box.

Congrats, you now have something new and different to show your friends. And a reason for them to drop in for a visit.

7. He is NOT living with me
I already have one strange creature moving in soon. That's enough.

8. Oh, he won't stay long. He's not the long-term commitment type.
The possum, I mean.
