how safe is IRC?
I'm trying to download last week's episode of Lost since I forgot to set the TV to record while watching the world series. I figured out how to get on a server and join a channel. I'm currently in queue to download the file I want. I've never used IRC so I have no idea what to expect.

1. Well....
DON'T enable "autodownload/autorun". And virus scan anything you download. But it's pretty safe, if you are at a popular channel.

3. It can take a while...
You could try this site:
http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/chanlist/

You may be able to find somewhere less busy. Also, early morning seems to be one of the best time to download.

4. not safe at all
There are worms going around, especially for older MIRC versions.

Also downloaded files are sometimes infected with vira and the communication may get logged.

6. I just downloaded the newest MIRC
and I have virus protection. I'll scan anything I download.

7. It's safer than Kazza ever was
IF you are careful. Just be careful. If you have the newest versions and virus scan software, and you don't AUTO RUN anything, you are just as safe as downloading anything off of the net.
