Heard it first at a party in the 70's - sitting around buzzed with the sounds of people talking and laughing all around and this musical story playing in the background. Got sucked into it and had to have it.
I picked "Highway 61" here, since that's pretty much definitive Bob to me. But the one that gets the most playing time is Desire, I think because I like Bob and Emmylou together so much. She actually makes him sound good a few times. Love that album.
More pure folkie and a real knockout in its own right.
Blood on the Tracks is up there on my list; with "Tangled Up in Blue" starting off the album, you just know the rest of it will be killer.
But Highway 61 Revisited is the quintessential Dylan and tops on my list. There are so many outstanding works on that album, from "Ballad of a Thin Man" to the shot that kicks off "Like a Rolling Stone" to the wrapup "Desolation Row".
Virtually every Dylan album from 61-77 is outstanding in its own right. Listen to them all.
