10. Engrish.com

A funny site. I lived in Japan for a while, and such valiant-but-failed translations (commonly known as--doy!--Engrish) are common. Engrish.com has fun with such signs but without trying to insult Japanese culture in general, which I appreciate...

But, please, remember to cut 'em a little slack. Believe me, some of our own translations of foreign language material are worse. We've all heard the "Coke Adds Life" debacle in China (where the translation came out "Coke causes your ancestors to rise from the grave" or some such).

And if you ever use Alta Vista's Babel Fish translator--for any language--you're aware of how literal word-for-word translation often comes out totally wanked. There was this contest on one message board where film fans took famous lines from classic movies, translated them from English to another language and then back to English, then posted the mangled results to see if anyone could guess the original quote. It was a mess!

11. I worked in Japan too

Lovely country, great people. The engrish is hilarious though. I think the problem is the kanji character which can often mean something different in English. I asked a Japanese friend delicately about all these bloopers on t-shirts, signs etc and she said "Oh, we know they're probably wrong, we just like the way they look!" :)

13. Sometimes It Works To Advantage

There was a bento-shop that had a long name that even a Kanji-lover like myself had trouble with: however, me and my gaijin friends all knew it because of its Engrish sign, "Teke Out." They got a lot of extra business just because of that...
