he was RAPPING LIVE with his own recording as a background

3. I believe you. Someone else wrote that he may have had to alter
the lyrics a bit and that might have thrown him off his rhythm. That makes sense too. Who cares. It was a powerful moment. Crowd went wild.
Why nit pick something to death that may not have been perfect but was certainly good enough.

2. So, he was singing over a complete recording of the song???
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the difference between that and lip-synching is that his mic was on instead of off. The entire song was played recorded...the voice track we heard already existed....yes?

4. yes
we heard the recording, and we heard his voice live as well.

in the studio, he'll have as many as 5 or 6 layers of his own voice

usually there's a minimum of 3, one of him whispering the lines, one of him just regular rapping, and one of him shouting

now it's not like he does all 3 or 5 or whatever for every song, and some songs only have 1 layer, but he employs them in different places in different songs in different ways and it really makes a noticeable difference, it makes the delivery more powerful

6. So he basically CAN'T lip-synch....
In fact, he doesn't have to sing live at all. The recording takes care of it.

Don't you get it??????

9. The difference is that Ashlee would not have used her actual vocal chords
But she would have claimed that she was. Eminem was using his vocal chords IN ADDITION to the track, and wouldn't claim anything otherwise.

19. Clearly some people still aren't getting it.
And somehow I doubt explaining it to them 50 more times will help at all. Sad, really.

12. You know EXACTLY what eminem was doing, but you hate him so...
you're intentionally ignoring the truth to continue an unfounded attack - sort of like the freepers do.

For those of you who are willing to listen to what is going on, what Eminem did is a standard recording industry technique. In fact this technique was the sole basis of Enya's recordings (if you remember her).

How it works is that during recording the singer will record many slightly different variations of the song, each of which are overlaid to create a rich full efect, almost choir-like, from one person.

Enya, in fact, would often overlay THOUSANDS of variations of the same song to get the desired affect.

Now of course, when performing live, Enya couldn't possibly sing a thousand voices simultaneosly, so she would use a backing track which would contain the overlays, while she sang live over the top - recreating the desired choir-like effect AND still performing live.

This is what is being described by mark414.

MercutioATC is INTENTIONALLY ignoring this because he obviously hates Eminem, and thus he is just looking for an excuse to attack him. Really quite lame in my opinion.

On many of their songs, particularly "Bohemian Rhapsody".

15. couldn't have said it better
and that's exactly why i'm making such a big deal out of such a minor thing

because people will look for any reason to attack em, or any rapper for that matter

i take my hip hop very fucking seriously, it is not just music it is a lifestyle and a culture and i take it personally when anyone attacks it

18. I don't hate him. (I think it's funny that you think you know how I feel)
I'm just stating fact. He's just singing over a pre-recorded complete version of the song. Had he not even shown up, we'd still have heard Mosh in its entirety.

Personally, I don't have a problem with lip-synching on stage, especially when it's due to a strenuous stage show. I just think it's silly to say that even though he was singing over a complete pre-recorded song, he wasn't doing the same thing Ashlee did.

(had she just kept singing over her own voice on stage, it wouldn't have been lip-synching?)

20. There you go again!
It was NOT a complete version of the song! Why else but hatred of Eminem would you keep insisting that?

If everything but the drum track was included, would you call that a complete version of the song? How about if the lead guitar was left out of a Jimi Hendrix track? Would that be a complete version of the song?

The point is, the other voice tracks ARE NOT the vocal track, but the vocal EFFECTS track(s) they are NOT complete, but a series of layers designed to be used WITH the vocals to gain a certain effect.

Is that so hard to understand?

It is like having an effects pedal connected to a guitar. Does having that effect pedal mean the guitar is not live?

21. The bottom line is if Eminem wasn't there, we'd still have heard the whole
song.

That's just about where I draw the line. Effects? Great. Voice tracks? No problem. Entire song recorded beforehand? Personally, I don't care, but it doesn't leave you much room to get holier-than-thou on Ashlee Simpson's ass....

22. Oh... I get it... You're an Ashlee Simpson fan!
Firstly, let me point out that I never mentioned Ashlee Simpson, in fact I don't think anyone on this thread did (I may be wrong, can't be bothered looking).

The point is, that you MAY or may NOT have heard the whole song. As Mark414 said, this technique may be used in the whole song, or only for parts of it. So it is possible that only PARTS of the voice track were overlaid like this.

Secondly, you may have heard the whole song, but not necessarily the way it was meant to be heard. For example, take the bass control on an amplifier and turn it down to 0, removing all bass frequencies from the audio. You will still hear every note played, but would you say you heard the whole song? Or would you say that the bass is an integral part of the song and you haven't heard the whole thing til youve heard it played with the bass set correctly?

So, not only did I NOT get "holier-than-thou on Ashlee Simpson's ass" we are still talking about something different.

In the Ashlee Simpson case, the whole song was recorded and both the band and the singer FAKED playing it. That is different from singing OVER a backing track.

Often people refer to the Milli Vanilli scandal as a reference to lip syncing. But that is NOT what the scandal was about. Everyone KNEW top artists lip synced their songs on occasion, such as in music videos etc. What the scandal was, was that the two men described as Milli Vanilli and always shown on the videos WERE NOT INVOLVED IN THE RECORDING AT ALL!

They never sang a word on stage or on the albums - they were a front for a group of truly talented artists who didn't have the "look" that would be successful. So the record company hired a couple of models to play the ROLE of the band, while the actual band members made the music.

Once again a TOTALLY different - and fraudulent - situation.

10. YES, he was lip synching and NO, I don't care.
I mean, it was pretty obvious. It sounded exactly like the single. But who cares? It's the message I was more concerned about...

11. This is done all the time
by many singers, and has been done for decades. Live performance venues can be very bad, and lots of singers use backup of themselves performing the song. The SNL soundstage is notorious for being a bad place to perform. Crummy acoustics, quite small. I've heard singers singing to entire symphony orchestras on SNL, and you couldn't get a symphony orchestra in there with a shovel and a battering ram.

It's the song that matters, isn't it? Why worry about something that is common practice for performers during live performances?

24. In the end, who really cares. I am guilty of hating Eminem
at one point in time, I mean diving for the remote to change the station hate. I couldn't stand the guy. I heard Lose Yourself, and started to like him a little. I felt the way he did, I could see the world in that song. As far as Mosh goes, guys, You are fighting over him lip Synching... In reality who cares, He is getting the message right. He is wanting Bush out, and while he won't come out and say "Kerry 2004" he is ardent about wanting the shrub out! I don't care if he dressed as fucking Minnie Mouse while singing it, HE HAS THE MESSAGE RIGHT! Yeah, I am guilty of thinking he isn't hard on the eyes, yeah, I may be a minor Fan, But god damnit people, Who cares what he did as long as he got he fucking message right? Love him or hate him, He still is in our Column. He wants Bush out, as do we. He may not be foaming at the mouth over Kerry, But he still has the right idea. I don't care if he sang it live or not, the fact is that he wrote it, the fact is that he means it, and the fact is that despite how you feel about the guy he has the right fucking idea. Besides it isn't worth losing what unity we do have. It's Eminem. Just my Two Cents.
