DVD Problems: A DVD will play on my laptop but not the DVD player
another DVD plays fine on both. :shrug:

What could be the problem?

6. I'd take it back and tell them it may be defective...
...sometimes they can be just defective enough to prevent them from playing in standalone machines.

Yeah. I tend to agree with the above poster. Sometimes foreign DVD's won't play on certain players but I'm not sure of the details.

Was it a commercial DVD or one that you burned yourself?
If it's one that you burned, you might want to try using a different brand of media.

3. More info please.....is it a COMMERCIAL DVD or recorded DVD
And if recorded is it a DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW (and what color is the reflective side?).

4. Dual Layer DVDs
They're newer and some of the older players can't handle them. I have the opposite problem because my PC DVD players are newer than my stand-alone units.

8. Is yours a Sony DVD player? They tend to be really finicky, sensitive to
dust, smudges, etc.

10. I will never buy another Sony DVD player
And it helps, I find, if every couple of showings you run a DVD cleaning disc through the Sony player.
