The Ohio State University: It's hard but it's so much fun to be a fan
Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 08:02 PM by sgr2
It seems like we at Ohio State have been on roller coaster ride for the last seventeen games. More than half of those games have been decided by less than a touchdown. Most of those have been decided in the last few minutes.

We've been through losing Clarett to injury and then losing Clarett for driving a Chevy MonteCarlo and lying about it. We've been sure we were going to lose games. We've been told our team just wasn't good enough to beat Miami. But for some reason we just keep winning. Heck, Cincinatti almost beat us last year. Purdue almost beat us last year. Northwestern almost beat us last year. Penn State almost beat us last year. Michigan almost beat us last year. Miami almost beat us last year.

But we just keep winning.

While I'm the first to admit that our next loss could be just next week, I have to say that no matter how good you might think your team is... you better watch out for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Because for whatever reason, they just win baby.

1. The least you could have done was
LOSE for all us U of M alumni being forced to wait to see OUR team cream Notre Dame. That would have taken the edge off the fury at the Buckeyes for hogging the airtime. We had to miss one of Perry's big plays.

I know you are not the least bit sorry - just wait til we turn Perry loose on you.

M go Blue!

2. I swear there is a Buckeye gene
My mom's side of the family is all Buckeyes - most of them the kind who have silver christmas trees with crimson ornaments. Since our branch of that family moved to the west coast (and later MT), I didn't grow up with it... and yet I did, every time we went to visit our OH relatives or got a card from them.

When I was in grade school band, we had to learn the Michigan "Victors" song, and I felt like a traitor. Hell, I know who Woody and Bo are, and I've never even watched a full game! And I don't plan to in the near future either!

NEVERTHELESS.... GO BUCKEYES!

3. No Sympathy for a team that wins
you do it ugly, but you win. Crap, try being a Duke fan for awhile. I'm not, but I imagine someone, somewhere is.

In the meantime, go Hawks!

4. That really sums up my feelings, too.
Every word of it. Especially the part about the next loss coming next week possibly. No way do most Buckeye fans think that the team is invincible, at least not the ones that pay any attention whatsoever. Now, we may act like it sometimes, but we know better.

A poster said a couple of weeks ago that she couldn't wait until the Buckeyes lost so all the Buckeye fans would no that OSU can be beaten. We already know. It just hasn't happened in 17 games.

6. You forgot to mention the escape vs Illinois last year
That was another double OT win, as I recall, a preview of the Fiesta Bowl as OSU fell behind by a TD in the first OT.

I'm a 'Canes fan who chuckled Saturday night when our soph reserve left corner, Glenn Sharpe, made a nifty interception of a quick pass to the right sideline in the 4th quarter vs East Carolina. Great, Glenn, about 8 months late. Sharpe was the victim of the oft-discussed and remarkably tardy interference penalty on 4th and 3 in the first Fiesta OT.

I just spent 4 weeks in Miami. The locals are ignorant disbelievers who are clamoring for a rematch and convinced the 'Canes would have waltzed past the Bucks in a second meeting last year, or minus the miscues. Win-ugly teams like OSU never garner the respect they deserve. Miami offensive line coach Art Kehoe made no secret of his obsession with the Buckeyes. "They outcoached us and out toughed us," he said. "But they're not tougher than us and they're not better than us. I just don't know if we'll ever get a chance to prove that."

The same brilliant analysts who are annointing Michigan this year had Iowa as two TDs better than OSU in midseason last year. OSU wins close, but never displays great vulnerability, always the mark of a true champion. Miami was down 33-10 late 3rd last week and the vaunted USC team of last year was down 21 points to Kansas St in the middle of the 4th, before losing by 7. This Oklahoma defense that everyone is gushing over was decimated by both Okla St and Texas A&M (frosh QB) last year, producing huge point swings and deficits. What's Ohio State's biggest deficit been in the last 2 seasons, especially in the second half? Probably 8 or 9 points, if I remember correctly.

Ohio St has a great coach who figures to stay. The biggest challenge is to take advantage of this peak period and recruit well enough to remain on top for an extended period. The Florida schools have such a surreal recruiting base that many more personnel and coaching gaffes can be overcome.

7. Biggest deficit...
9 points. Twice.

To Nothwestern and Cincinnati.

And the Illinois game was a one-OT game. Illinois never scored. We scored first, 5 play drive capped off with a Maurice Hall 9-yard run.

So, if you believe in patterns....

Illinois - 1 overtime
Michigan
Miami - 2 overtimes
Washington
SDSU
NC State - 3 overtimes
Bowling Green
Nothwestern
Wisconsin
Iowa - will it be 4 overtimes????

11. I'm very much a realist
I'm also not going to be bawling that it is Clarett's fault when the loss comes. Teams win or lose because they are teams not because of one player. That said, the sun will come up no matter what happens. Good luck to all your teams, Trumad.

12. Hey gives a little slack.....
For all of you out there that are not OSU fans, give us a break. You need to remember that us Buckeye fans are people that know that we only have one true professional football team in the state. OSU

I think that all the other out there are just really bitter at the fact the OSU has finally made it and you are tired of see them win. Because it fills your television screens.

Well you know there was a time were all us Buckeyes saw on TV was everyone elses team out there. OSU did something that has been deemed by many those that are fans or not, to be the largest history making National Championships.

Please I understand that there are other teams that go to the show, and perform well. But it is hard pressed to find another team that can give there fans three consecutive heart attacks in a row, in one game and still hold on to life.

No, OSU does deserve the spot light and yeah the fans Of the good Ol' Buckeyes are faithful but we are wise...we know that at some point they will disappoint, but with a city full of fans, and the vast amount of support that has been behind them, we hope that they will to continue to kick some major as*.

GO BUCKS!!!
