1. Isn't damage possible
if you are constantly turning the machine on and off?

4. Leave the machine on
Sortof. Turn on the varios power-saving options, so most of the machine shuts down. Turn the monitor off (tubes use a fair amount of power, flat panels have a finite lifetime for the backlight bulbs). If you have an actual laser printer (not an inkjet), turn that off, the fuser roll consumes almost as much power as your toaster.

7. I generally "hibernate" (PC) or "sleep" (Mac).
My PowerBook wakes up real fast, so I save all that time booting up, plus I found that waking it up takes a lot less power than booting it up. Like if I put it to sleep and then unplug it, I have a lot more power left on the battery when I wake it up later than I would if I would have powered it down and rebooted.

9. of course off
It takes quite a lot of power to run this thing. Also there is a certain wear and tear when running a computer (Fan ball bearings, Harddisks, LCD Backlight, ...).

15. I turn mine off -- just a habit, don't leave anything running. etc.
My guess is that even machines need rest, too! :)
