I met a man yesterday. This man is my patient; in the hospital for a blood infection requiring IV antibiotics. Normally, I would not have a political or religious discussion under these circumstances, it just doesn't happen. But while I was in his room, the TV was tuned to CNN showing the OBL videotape, reporting OBL's call to terrorists to kill Americans, etc. My patient very clearly voiced his disgust, then went on to say he's Muslim and is heartbroken by the misconception radical Muslims promote about Islam. He also finds it disturbing how the * administration capitalizes on this and paints Islam as an evil, violent religion, at least that's what they'd have us believe. We talked about everything - Iraq, Israel/Palestine, the current climate in the US, * and his buddies. I spent about an hour embroiled in deep conversation with a man whom it would seem I had absolutely nothing in common. What I found was how very little I know about the Islamic religion. What I found is that we agreed on just about everything we discussed. What I found is that people are people, there are good and bad in every race, religion and country. I already knew that but it was wonderful to have the affirmation.
As I was ready to leave, he reached into a bag and handed me a book , "Survey of Islamic Doctrine" and told me to read it. I will, and I thank him for expanding my horizons.
