1. When did KK donuts become good?
I sort of remember them in Charlotte (where I think they started) as the White Trash food.

originally, but they've been all over the Carolinas for years.

24. We already have a bakery department with donuts in our Hellmart here
Is that just a southern phenomenon? Actually, walmart donuts aren't too shabby...can't imagine them allowing competition to enter and sell from their very floor.

26. KK is a North Carolina phenomenon
They've been around since the 1930s. If you aren't getting them "Fresh, Hot, Now", you've sold boxes to raise money for everything from school projects to church to God knows what else.

4. I have had them a few times, but was not terribly impressed

When I was a kid we had a place called the Spudnut shop.. It was a little tiny place and the donut fryer was in the front window.. The windows were OPEN, so the smell would waft down the street.. The donuts were put on little conveyors, and would arrive at the counter so your could choose the icing and toppings.. Cost 10 cents each..

Cold milk in teensy little bottles in an old coke machine cooler or coca cola..

They were 1 block from a junior high, and the catholic high school.. Needless to say, they were packed after school :):)

recipes here:

Have no idea if this is what you're looking
for but it came straight from Joy of Cooking.
Buttermilk Potato Doughnuts

1 cup freshly riced boiled potatos
Beat well:
2 eggs
Add very slowly, beating constantly:
2/3 c sugar
Stir in the potatos and:
1 c buttermilk
2 Tbs melted butter
Sift before measuring:
4 c all-purpose flour
Resift with:
2 tsp double-acting baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
2/3 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg or 1/4 tsp cinnamon
Stir in the sifted ingredients and the
potato mixture until they are blended. Chill
the dough until it is easy to handle and
cut. Fry in deep fat heated to 375 until
golden brown.

Good Luck!

or

Spudnuts
1 3/4 c. milk
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. mashed potatoes
1 pkg. dry yeast
1/2 c. warm water
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 tsp. vanilla
6 1/2 to 7 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. salt

Scald milk; stir in shortening, sugar and potatoes. Cool to lukewarm. Mix
well. Sprinkle yeast over warm water and stir until yeast is dissolved. Add
to lukewarm mixture. Stir in beaten eggs. Sift flour with baking powder and
salt; add gradually to the lukewarm mixture. Mix well after each addition.
Add another 1/2 c. flour if needed. This is a soft dough.

On a well floured board, roll out dough and cut with a doughnut cutter.
Place doughnuts on waxed paper; cover with a cloth and let rise until double
in bulk. Fry doughnuts, a few at a time, in melted shortening or oiled
heated to 375F. Drain on absorbent paper. Shake a few doughnuts at a time in
a bag containing sugar and cinnamon.

Makes about 4 dozen.

13. Krispy Kremes are not just for "white trash"
I have a friend who grew up in a very wealthy family in Georgia and she said they would make it a point to have Krispy Kremes the day before Passover. During Passover one cannot eat any leavened products such as noodles or bread or even drink beer.

:)

Buy cheap imported shit from overseas sweat shops (its hard to find good child labor these days) and you can have a cardiac while you shop for it......well deserved.

...if I want my soul to depart my body while I still inhabit it, I'll go to Wal-Mart. Never the twain shall meet for me...

10. KK @ Wallyworld?

Is KK jumping the shark because of it? I've liked them as an occasional beach food (always hot), but not on a regular basis.

11. They've been in gas stations around Texas for a while now...
...so I guess this is just an extension of that.

What gets me is: the nearest Wal-Mart to me has a McDonald's inside. There's also an ACTUAL McDonald's right across the parking lot from the Wal-Mart. I don't get it, but then, I've never had to placate a screaming kid inside a Wal-Mart.

12. Yes, we have a McDs inside
our local Wal-Mart. I wonder where they'll put the KK? In front of the eyeglass store or out by the tires? :eyes:

Is there anything on the planet W-M doesn't want to sell?

15. Krispy Kreemes..............
are nearly the WORST doughnuts I've ever had. I say nearly because of some homemade doughnuts a friend used to make. IMO, any Mom&Pop operation makes them better than KK. I guess I grew up in an area where doughnuts were considered a normal breakfast, and there were dozens of places to get them. Best doughnuts I've ever had were (and still are) made by Wegman's (a massive upstate New York food chain). Their doughnuts make KK's look and taste like dog doo-doo.

27. Cold KK are gross
I can only eat them warm. I am assuming the Wal Mart ones will be "delevered fresh"
When I ran a scout troop in Troutman, NC we would get the day old KK's for next to nothing and sell them for $1 a dozen. I bought a box once. People bring them into work, I skip it.
