Computer help needed

I installed updates and DSL and now my sound is missing. I need help from a computer guru.

Ok I'm a girl but I do know to turn my speakers on because the last time that I thought that the sound went off they weren't on. My sound card is missing or something like that.

5. Uh, that's not what I meant...

Twas a joke. That would be the first question you'd get from a "guru" answering the help lines in India (hence the accent).

I'm a guy, and lots of girls I know are much more computer literate than I am. Every one of them is smarter than I am in general. What I said had nothing to do with you being a girl.

4. list of things

1. check all of your audio connections, including power for the speakers

2. check your volume controls in the operating system usually under
accessories->entertainment->volume

3. check to see if the driver was modified
Go to control panel->sounds and multimedia->audio
here you need to make sure your playback and record preferred device
is selected to your sound card (which odds are is some sort of Creative
Labs Sound blaster)

Go to control panel->system->hardware->device manager->open up sound
and see if there is any exclamation symbol by something like "WDM"
model and if so, then reinstall the driver by right clicking on the
exclamation mark and go to properties then choose update driver.

You can also delete the exclamation mark portion, reboot and hope
that the plug and play system automatically reinstalls or use the disks
or download the software.

You can also try using Windows update to scan your system and
look under "drivers" in the scan results and see if that caught
anything that had been uninstalled or corrupted.

6. If your system doesn't boot back up and install the driver,

AIDA works pretty well in looking at your hardware and discovering exactly what you have to work with (in terms of sound cards, and such). You could then do a search on the net for the correct drivers.

7. No offense, but "are your speakers on" fixes 50% of my audio problem calls

With everyones help I reinstalled my sound drivers and they are back on.
