Is Netscape my Big Brother? For Puter Studs. (I don't use the G word :-) )

Please forgive my niavete regarding puter stuff but I don't "get it". I'm sure there is a simple explaination but...

Everytime I go online, I can't open anything until Netscape does it's thing. It has to do it's "plugins" (?) after I log on. (it does this automatically) before I close it out and go to IE. And if for some reason Netscape is messed up, I can't get on anything w/IE. Why? Is there a way to fix this?

1. Which version of Netscape

do you have.

The latest version launches its IM service on boot. You can switch it off by going to preferences and deselecting the start on boot option.

You may also want to check your Startup folder. Click on Start in the lower left of your screen. Then move the mouse to Programs, then look for the Startup folder and see if any Netscape programs are in there. If there are just right-click on them and choose delete.

3. Sorry I took so long to reply

I hope you are still here. I had to actually log off and back on again to find which version it is. :dunce: It's a Netscape 4.6 (yes I've got an old puter- Gateway 2000- bought in 98). My daughter did all of the settings and taught me how to use it (the puter)

Does knowing the version help?

BTW- I will try your suggestion, but what happens if I do? There are several selections, Navigator, Communicator, ect. Will it mess anything up if I delete?

5. do you prefer Netscape or IE (internet explorer, ie Microsoft)

you can rid your self of either product, or just shut one off entirely.

you just have to set one browser as your default, it's not necessary to delete either program.

2. Looks like NS

Is set as your default browser. If you're closing NS and switching to IE anyway, why not just remove NS?

4. Simple fix

key in : Ctrl Alt Del
keys,and in the window that pops up of all programs running, close (End Task) the Netscape that is running in the background.

IE and Netscape are both trying to run, so shut off one, or the other.

But how did this happen? It's not like I sought after either one! Maybe my daughter used Net and I IE???? How does either invade one's puter anyway? It's weird. It's like the 2 programs fight or something.

Recall the legal battle between Netscape and Microsoft and the issues involved?
windows defaults to IE, and other browsers are shut out due to the OS. it's built in, but contrary to popular belief, you can rid your system of IE if you want to, and allow the 'competitor' program to load.

sounds like you worked it out all the same despite the petty bs from the corporations that seek to control your puter...and thus, you.
