SCENARIO: You are a level 4 elven mage, and orcs have attacked your party.
Do you cast magic missle or cast a protective spell on your group?

2. Gawd...
Back in my D&D days -- which was in the 80s -- our little group used to use "Magic missiles! Magic missiles!" as shorthand for noobie dweeb.

3. Details?
How many orcs?

How many fighter-types in my party?

What else do I have memorized (vs. orcs I'd probably use sleep rather than MM, for example)?

Which protective spell?

How wounded are we?

Are we heading to a safe-area (town/inn/castle/etc) or are we leaving, and about to have an adventure?

Will I have a chance soon to re-memorize?

Sorry. I get a bit too analytical in my spell casting. But it's why I LOVE playing mages or specialists! (Currently running a lvl 10 Wiz/Loremaster specialized in enchantment with abjuration and evocation prohibited--I wanted a challenge...few regrets, except when we've dealt with non-living opponents.)

5. I miss gaming because of the element of surprise when interacting with
folks.

I do love my Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege, but they can't replace the real live people. (It is fun to play them anyway, though. And every time I am a half-elven, fighter/ranger/wizard combo. Jill of all trades, I am.)

4. This is SO gonna get swept off to the Lounge *g*
And I never played an Elven mage, but I DID use MM with my Pixie.

And do NOT mock the little winged one. She was also very handy with a dagger and took out more orc eyes while flying around invisible.

...run like hell plan...if that fails, a protective spell for my group. Not sure the effect on orcs, but there is always the missle, or the run like hell again plan as back-up! ;-)
Plese roll 20 sided die....

12. Any other D&Ders get talked by their conservative Christian
friends into playing a really sucky fundagelical ripoff called "LightBringers" or some such silliness? Instead of casting spells we had to recite Bible verses at the monsters.

Didn't care for the game, myself. Just lacked the magic that D&D had, in every sense of the phrase. *l*
