Feminists' guilty pleasures...chauvinistic songs we love but won't admit
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 07:29 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
except in a forum like this...

I'll start...I consider myself a strong feminist, however, I really like "Suffragette City" by Bowie...even (gulp) the "Wham, Bam, Thank-you, Ma'am" part...

OK, there's got to be other feminists out there who have a secret enjoyment of songs that are so much fun, you like them in spite of the Neanderthal sentiments. MKJ

1. Hey, that's because Suffragette City is just a good song
I love Bowie. I still say David Bowie with Queen ranks as one of the greatest collaborations in Rock-N-Roll.

3. Okay.....but don't tell anyone.
Baby I'm Yours. (and I'll be yours until the stars no longer shine! Until the poets run out of rhyme! In other words, until the end of time......) OH YEAH!

4. Ok...shhhhhh....come really close...I can't believe I am confessing this..
My husband and I jokingly sing Toby Keith (:puke:) Who's Your Daddy to each other. Here's where the ick factor comes in. I kind of like the beat. Don't tell anyone.

6. Well, I don't know if it would be a sexist song..but my other
secret enjoyment song is "Bang a Gong, Get It On" by T-Rex...my teenage daughter would faint if she ever knew I liked the song. MKJ

5. Look, if a song has a great melody and is performed well enough
I don't care if the lyrics are "RandomKoolzip has a tiny dick/and his entire family suck gasoline through a glass tube inserted through a dead camel's cock/and everyone in his ethnic group killed Buddha while raping kittens/yeah, baby, RandomKoolzip is hung like a teddy bear...." Lyrics are just pitched mouth noises anyways.

If a lyricist has a gift for words, then that's a bonus. But the melody is what I listen for.

8. I see your point
but I'm talking about lyrics that like that not only are not nice, but actually encourage abusive behavior "I want a girl who will laugh for no one else. when i'm away she puts the makeup on her shelf, when I'm away she never leaves the house" And other such lyrics that I shouldn't have been singing when I was 16

11. Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side
That's not really my first choice, but I'm not printing the lyrics to a certain Dead Kennedys song that talks about removing a retainer.

12. Even though I'm a man, I like to think of myself as feminist.
To me the Beatles "Run For Your Life" has to be the most sexist song ever performed by a rock band:

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
or I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

Well I know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

I'd rather see you dead, little girl
than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
of I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
