What song do you HATE more than any other?
Whenever it comes on the radio, you run over to change the station immediately.

For me, one of them is "Mr. Bojangles". What pure torture that stupid song is. "Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles, dance."

Who could have thought of such a crap lyric, I ask you?

Now that's poetry. I could recite the whole thing from memory if you have a few hours.

11. Goodbye to you my trysted friend
Edited on Sat Jul-12-03 10:03 PM by ForrestGump
We've know each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABCs
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Ah. Such memories. From my earliest kidhood, and made that much sweeter because I was head over heels (unrequited, as seems a recurring theme) with a girl named Michelle. As I lay there dying, a hundred or more years from now, perhaps I'll sing this song as I head toward that bright light....

Anyone up for a rousing chorus of "Billy, Don't Be A Hero"?

EDIT: 'trysted'? Kinda puts a new spin on the song.

14. Really? -Just how many girls named 'Michelle' have you known?
I can't say that I had actual nostalgia related to the song, and perhaps that limits even further my ability to find anything redeeming in it.

It was amoungst the albums and 45's my eldest brother ceremoniously dumped upon me when he suddenly acquired a bit of taste.

She was a wild woman........well, for a seven-year-old. I hasten to add that I was a seven-year-old, too. Yep, nostlagia may be all that song has going for it.

Did your bro dump a copy of "Disco Duck" on you, too? Now there is a classic.

"God Bless the U.S.A."

Earlier this year my 10-year-old daughter tried to talk me out of attending a performance at her school - she didn't want to tell me that the entire fourth grade was going to be assaulting my ears with that piece of crap. I went anyway and noticed that during that number she kept her mouth shut. I must be doing something right.

I apologize to Taylorites herein, but the dude just never did it for me. He even managed to suck the soul out of a Marvin Gaye song. Granted, he's no (shudder) Michael Bolton, but he's no less insipid for that.

On the other hand, good for him that he's still going.

32. "You Light Up My Life"

Not only was it the worst song of the decade that produced more bad pop than any other in history, but with ten agonizing weeks at #1, it was the biggest hit of the entire 1970s! What the hell were people thinking back then?!

But on the other hand, one might've expected a record that horrendous from Pat Boone's daughter.

FORTUNATE SON (J.C. Fogerty)

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one.

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no,

44. Jerry Jeff Walker did.
He wrote it about a man he met in the drunk tank of a New Orleans police staion during the 60's. He was a street legend in the Big Easy and would dance for drinks in bars throughout the french quarter.
I always liked that one and found it fun to play on my Geetar.
BTW, the Jerry Jeff version is much better than the Nitty Gritty Dirt Bands rendition.
