What is your all time favorite film?
My favorite is The World According to Garp and somehow I actually got to sit down and watch the whole thing this afternoon. I don't even own it or have it, but it was on HBO. I've probably seen it 20 times but it's one of the rare, truly human films with everything- love, death, marriage, adultery, children, sex, feminism and gender roles, and politics all interwoven into a beautiful fabric that never fails to make me laugh and really, really cry (especially with the Walt thing to those who know the story). It's been my favorite for years, even in my teens and before I experienced quite as much life myself.

Then there's the music used. The Beatles of course and this particular Nat 'King' Cole song was used within the movie and was the end theme as well. Even the song has a certain melancholy element to it:

There Will Never Be Another You

This is our last dance together,
Tonight soon will be long ago.
And in our moment of parting,
This is all I want you to know...

There will be many other nights like this,
And I'll be standing here with someone new.
There will be other songs to sing,
Another fall...another spring...
But there will never be another you.

There will be other lips that I may kiss,
But they won't thrill me,
Like yours used to do.
Yes, I may dream a million dreams,
But how can they come true,
If there will never, ever be another you?

Yes, I may dream a million dreams,
But how can they come true,
If there will never, ever be...
Another you?

Vincent D'Onofrio's character especially sticks in your head I think.
Shouldn't have pushed him 'cause he was close to the edge.

6. Mine is "A Clockwork Orange".
It is one of the few films that I can watch multiple times and still enjoy. Every time I see that movie, I pick up something that I never noticed before.

Kubrick took such a massive risk with this film. To create a character as vile as Alex and have the aduience pulling for him as opposed to relinquishing control of one's self is amazing.

45. I like Dylan better live than recorded.
He is never the same. Lately he has been sharper than I have seen him ever. He is probably at the top of his career right now. You will enjoy the show even if you are not a big Dylan fan.

Dylan lived across the street from some buddies of mine when I was in college. He was recording an album in NO. A friend of mine played drums on the album, so I got a chance to meet Dylan a few times. He is the most ordinary "star" I have ever met.

along the same stretch of road...
in a dense fog...
just like this...
I saw the worst accident I ever seen...
There was this sound...
Like a garbage truck!
Dropped off the empire state building!
And when they finally pulled the driver's body...
From the Twisted... Burning... Wreck...
It looked like...
THIS!!!!!!
hooo hooo hooo hooo hooo haaaah!

Yes sir...
That was the worst accident I ever seen.

21. Apocalypse Now.
There's the scene where Sheens character is trapped in a dark metal container, and is delirious (presumably from physical torture. As he regains consciousness and look at the only source of light, a couple of crack in the container. Only it's not just a container, it's completely black and no details whatsoever can be made out. It's like the cracks are cracks in space and time. Small cambodian children are on the outside looking in. All he sees are the childrens eyes peering through the cracks. At one point he passes out and again reawakens to look again at the children's eyes. Only this time among the children is Colonel Kurtz peering in like some kind of great Satan.

It's very well put together regardless of the other stuff (not that the other stuff isn't important or significant, but as far as looking at the film itself). Maybe it's the inner southerner in me (my dad grew up in the south) or something.
Plus, I still think you're totally cool, Mrs Grumpy. :hi:

46. The Empire Strikes Back
Hands down the best movie ever made. Every single scene is played out perfectly. And you have to love that shot where the Star Destroyer, which were established as being very, very large in the first movie, is slowly being covered by the shadow of something even bigger... Classic example of how to convey a sense of enormity: take something that we know is huge, and slowly cover it with a shadow to tell us there's something even huger.
