2. No, but
then I celebrate the day as Leif Ericsson and Freydis Ericsdottir Day.

They were here first, and didn't destroy the indigenous population.

with a Route 66 Eskimo Joe's shirt, and a regular blue eskimo joe's sweatshirt. Is this your clever way of asking us what we're wearing today?!

14. sorry, but it's this kind of thing that gives liberals bad press
unless you're an American Indian, it makes about as much sense to wear a black armband for Columbus day as it would for a modern-day Italian to apologize for crimes that the Romans committed.

just like it's a little late to kick all the white people out of north america.

We're here, deal with it.

Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 02:53 PM by Nordic
since Lincoln killed a whole ton of Indians and George Washington was a terrorist/insurgent leader.

And Martin Luther King day, since he was a minister and we have to keep church and state separated.

And Easter because it's insulting to people who don't believe Jesus rose from the dead.

And Labor Day because it celebrates working for the man.

Using your logic, as long as you're not Jewish you really don't have anything to complain about?

29. well if the indians had kicked us out, there wouldn't be Columbus day
and if Hitler had one, well then every day would be Hitler day.

And 500 years later, they'd still be celebrating it.

I just think wearing black and protesting Columbus day makes about as much sense as giving reparations for slavery.

30. What's wrong with reparations for slavery.
We treated the slaves horribly. We made money off of them, "we" as in the US government and a number of corporations still in existence today. We promised them reparations when we freed them, which they deserved, only we reneged on those promises and their descendants have lived in poverty ever since due to the effects of slavery and Jim Crow laws.

"well if the indians had kicked us out, there wouldn't be Columbus day. and if Hitler had one, well then every day would be Hitler day.

And 500 years later, they'd still be celebrating it"

Talk about not making much sense.

36. Minor point of clarification
It's only a holiday for federal employees. The federal government does not have the power to declare nationwide holidays.

However, I completely agree with you - the holiday for Italian American pride should not hinge on this man.

31. i disagree most strongly
it maybe too late to reclaim the lives, but it's not too late to fess up the who Columbus was, and to end celebrating his life. If that gives me "bad press" for believing this so be it.

33. Think about it, it's a stupid holiday
Other explorers aside, we all know Columbus wasn't the first person to discover the Americas. The land was full of people when he got here. Columbus Day basically commemorates the day white people first arrived. It sounds like a holiday the Aryan Nations would invent.

23. fortunately it's not one here either
except on company calendars

but the local shops do seem to love having sales on all their 3-rd world sweat-shop wares on this day. Kind of a tribute to one of the early exploiters, I guess...

26. I'm wearing black
but I hadn't thought to mourn on Columbus Day. Nor do I see any reason for celebrating. I'm sorry Columbus (among others) was an asshole; but I can't honestly say I'm sorry he ever stumbled upon America. The holiday is worthwhile from a contemplative standpoint, if not a celebratory one.

I varied my homeschool lesson for my son today; and we talked about Columbus...both his contribution and the devastation that resulted for Native Americans. We discussed the importance of having respect for people with different beliefs and customs. I'm not sure how much sunk in; but if he hears it for the next 11 years, he ought to get something out of it.

From every evil act, good can grow if we allow it. Inhibitors of that growth are hatred and bitterness on the part of victims; and denial and complacency on the part of aggressors.
