High School Library Yanks Book For Girls After Mother Deems It Pornography
<snip>

A controversial guide for teenage girls was yanked off high school library bookshelves in Gilbert on Wednesday after a mother labeled it as "a how-to book on sex."

Mesa resident Deborah Myers said she was shocked when she started flipping through Deal with It! A Whole New Approach to Your Body, Brain and Life as a Gurl, a book her 16-year-old daughter Pamella checked out at the Desert Ridge High School library.

"It's basically pornography and it's just awful," Myers said. "It shows stick figures in sexual positions and it's just not right." advertisement

With a hot-pink cover and 320 colorful pages, the bestselling book comes from the creators of the gURL.com, a popular Web site dedicated to "discussing issues that affect the lives of girls age 13 and older in a non-judgmental, personal way."

Chapters and topics range from "Boobs" and "What's Up Down There" to zit remedies, depression and rape. At Desert Ridge, which is part of Gilbert Public Schools, teens often gather around the book and laugh, Pamella said, but to her, the content is "just not appropriate for high school."

1. I am a librarian, we go thru this crap all the time
I know of one librarian who refused to get rid of a sex ed book in a school library in Alaska. The school board backed her up. There were hysterical protests and screaming freeper parents freaking out every day in front of the building. Things got so bad that one morning she woke up to find a moose heart stuck to her front door with an arrow. She and her husband decided to send their kids to grandma's in California for a few months.

The irony was that the book was actually scheduled to be pulled at the end of the year because it was old and didn't have AIDS prevention information.

Kiss a librarian today. We defend your academic freedom.

2. Well I'm sure she is doing her part as a parent.
I mean, I'm sure Ms Myers has fully equipped her daughter with all of this relevant info and has had several frank talks with her daughter about sex and adolescences and so fully remembers her own teen years, that, I'm quite sure Pamella doesn't need that silly old book.

Ha. The fact that mommy called it "just not appropriate" seems to me that mommy has not had these talks with her kid.

Get a clue Deborah.

9. If this mother thinks that two stick figures.........................
shown in a variety of positions could actually be pornographic, then I'm sure that she has never said "Boo" to her own daughter.

12. If sex is treated as a taboo in a household,
it will most likely be THAT kid that gets in trouble, getting pregnant, or getting someone else pregnant.

Beliefs on gun control aside, when children in homes with guns are not taught gun safety, it's often those kids that shoot someone accidentally.

Same stinking thing.

5. Oh, NO!
The last thing we want is for our teenagers to learn something about sex! Better for them to fumble around in the back of a station wagon and end up pregnant.

A friend of mine who is a graphic designer had a project once that involved drawing stick figures in sexual positions. It wasn't the same book, it was a medical book to help people after surgery. Needless to say, there's not much to see in a couple of fornicating stick figures.

7. LOL
Actually, the mom might prefer that - one stick is CLEARLY better than two sticks, or no sticks!

11. My mother gave me a copy of "Our Bodies, Ourselves"
when I was 9 years old. I read it cover to cover and we had a few talks after.

I didn't have to learn a thing on the schoolyard. If anything, I was correcting the schoolyard talk.

13. Aren't these the same parents..
... who are always talking about how "good parents monitor their children's activities"?

Don't want your kid reading that book? Don't let her. What the fuck gives you the right to prevent anyone else from reading it?

14. I hate to break it to her Mom...
but, sooner or later, shes gonna learn about nearly EVERY one of those things in that book... better she gets it from a book then from somewhere else.

Jesus Christ, being that overprotective is going to have the exact opposoite effect.

15. We're taught abstinence education here...
subsequently, three girls got pregnant in one of my classes freshmen year. One got pregnant twice, having abortions both times.

I also know a lot of people who have really f*cked up views because of the abstinence education. Like "I can do _______, but I'm still a virgin and won't get STDs!"
