I went to a Ren Faire today, ask me anything!
The Cloisters faire at Ft. Tryon Park in NY was today. This is a free one-day event every autumn and it's always a lot of fun to dress up with other medieval enthusiasts and check out the hand-made crafts.

The weather was really nice today and the place was packed, but something really neat I noticed were all the liberal and anti-Bush buttons! Not that Ren geeks are a terribly conservative crowd, but I noticed way more political stuff this year. Even better, there was a booth staffed by Kerry/Edwards campaign volunteers, and there were people with voter registration forms already stamped (the deadline in NY state is next week). I got asked four times by four different people if I was registered. :D

All in all it was a great day.

1. Free admission? Cool! The one here in Minnesota is wonderful, we go
every year, but it's expensive!
It's great though; we usually go for my youngest daughter's birthday.
Did you get to throw rotten tomatoes at a guy in stocks? One of my favorite things!
I also love all the artisans and craftspeople and musicians...not to mention the costumes!
We're going in costume next year; sarahbellum says she's tired of feeling 'all 21st century' when we go!

3. This is a smallish faire
I always go in costume...well costume is not the best word. Faires are the one place where I look normal with the way I usually dress. Today I was dressed like a pirate wench. :silly:

No rotten tomatoes (rats!) but there were some great musicians. There's something about medieval music that just has...spirit. It's hard to explain, but I love it.

5. LOL
My best friend wore a light sabre with his doublet.

When someone asked how come he carried a light sabre instead of a regular sword, he said he doesn't believe in fair fights. :D

8. This is the name of an olde Simon&Garfunkel tune.
Scarborough Fair
Are you goin’ to scarborough fair? parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine

Tell her to make me a cambric shirt, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Without no seams nor needlework, then she’ll be a true love of mine

Tell her to find me an acre of land, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Between the salt water and the sea strand, then she’ll be a true love of mine

Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather, parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather, then she’ll be a true love of mine

Are you goin’ to scarborough fair? parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine

7. Me too!
I went to the Faire in Woodstock CT. It was awesome. My 8 yr old daughter was a riot at "Smite the Knight" She not only attacked visciously, but also recited the entire "french taunting" scene from Monty Python's Holy Grail, while fighting :)

My wife narrowly escaped a "wench trap" (a lasso of rope encircling a bouquet stuck in the ground)

Also, I have never seen so many gorgeous women in my life :)

11. Your daughter is adorable!
Great kid! :D

Wow a wench trap...don't tell my boyfriend about that he might get ideas.

I think it's the outfits. One of the reasons I wear corsets despite the discomfort is because I just feel so damn...sexy when I wear them. Instant curves!

20. It's not just the corsets.
I am an admirer of all sorts of women, not just super-models.

I think what is most attractive is that these women are so confident, wanton and happy and free at these things, whereas in everyday life, they are constantly bombarded with images of "perfect" bodies to compare themselves to. In 14 years of marriage, I don't think a day has passed when my wife has not asked me "do I look fat?"

9. There was a much bigger presence
at the Cooper Young festival in Memphis (an art fair). I went to the same fair right before the 2000 election and there was very little campaign presence. This year there was a huge booth in the most prominent spot, tons of Kerry stickers and posters, and people walking around with signs asking everyone if they were registered. It was awesome to see.

13. That is so cool.
I've never seen such an outpouring of grassroots activism as I have since 2000. People are PISSED and they are out there working very hard (I've volunteered too).

* is toast!

24. well I have to explain my experience at ren faire
I went on a school trip to Ren Faire. I live in L.A. and the faire is ten million miles away from civilization. There isn't a town near the glen helen pavillion. So, we were stuck there for 8 hours. It was hot, I had cramps, and the drunk faire workers pissed me off. It was probably just the circumstances. I'm sure if I was there for a couple of hours, it would have been fun.

Warped Tour(this year at Randall's Island near you in NYC) was all political ALL anti-bush with a voter registration booth that was quite active. I spoke to the girl who worked it and she said she registered MANY that day. "Ignorant Son Of An Asshole" t-shirts were everywhere
