We saved a life at the SPCA.
Bailey is a four-year-old retriever cross, and we're all very happy. Especially his "brother" Speck, who is no longer an only pug.

Thanks for indulging me. And don't forget to consider a fully-grown dog the next time you're looking.

5. What a sweet face!
We have three shelter animals and two we 'rescued' and kept from that fate. One was in a 'kill shelter' -- she's the only little kitten we took in. One cat was over two years old, the other two were mostly grown and just showed up. The dog was two-ish, he also came from a shelter.

You done a good thing. We've never regretted it for a minute.

Good luck!

7. Oh!
How could anyone give him up? Poor thing looks like he knows he was abandoned. What a lovely dog! I'm glad there are people like yourself who rescue animals like him. It breaks my heart that animals are abandoned like this. They are sentient beings and if people can't treat them like part of the family, instead of 'things' they can just discard, they have no business having a pet at all.

I wish I could rescue another dog and perhaps a couple of cats, but I rent and my landlords don't allow anymore pets. :(

8. My understanding is that the original owners
were splitting up and individually couldn't/wouldn't give him the attention he deserved.

I think they did the right thing. Believe me, there are worse fates for unwanted animals.

Good for you and your animal rescues! And kudos to your landlord. He/She could have been jerks about the whole thing, I'm sure.

10. Bailey ~~ :o)
Welcome Home Bailey! I have an SPCA rescue dog too!! O8)

Two winters ago, I went to the SPCA shelter after they went on our local news pleading for people to come help them. They had found 77 Kerry Blue Terriers inside small crates, CRAMMED into an old abandoned bus. The owner had abandoned them weeks before and left them to starve and dehydrate. It was -20 outside so some of them died because of the cold.

When they removed them from their boxes, their legs were too weak to stand and walk for a long time. (The boxes weren't big enough for them to even move).. :( Even their poor eyes were swollen shut. The Vet said that the urine in the bus was just so bad, that it was literally burning their eyes.

They lady who abandoned them had about 130 dogs, but a lot of them were dead by the time troopers & the SPCA responded.

I just can't believe what an evil witch that woman must be. They eventually found her at a bar and served an arrest warrant on her - but of course, she wound up not serving any jail time in the end.

My dog "Duffy" (who is laying by my feet as I type) is spoiled rotten and is fat and happy! :)

13. Turning in pretty soon.
Before I do, I just wanted to thank you all for your replies. We also believe in feeding dogs raw food, so he'll be benefiting from that, just as our pug has for the past four years. (I'm away on business the next few days, so if you have any questions about the benefits of raw food, I won't be much help.)

In the meantime, Bailey's been a very good dog, and his previous owners were obviously good trainers, although he seems to hate the prospect of a bath.

Again, thanks, everyone, for indulging me.

Kick bush ass until I get back on Wednesday!

16. raw foods..some germs/spores/eggs get past dog stomach acids
and cause disease, i would imagine.
anyone know for sure?

True for humans. Well proven that cooking kills many germs for human food. This outweighs the vitamin benefits of raw foods.

dogs have stronger acids, but i doubt they can kill as well as cooking does.

anyone know?

17. Bailey is awesome :)
A good friend of mine has a black lab mix named Bailey :) His tail should be registered as a deadly weapon, he can take out plants, coffe cups and tower speakers with one swipe of his tail :)

Congratulations, he looks like a great pup :)

I thought about getting a dog, and there's an outside chance I could talk my landlord into it, but living in an apartment with NO yard, I don't think it'd be fair to the dog.

18. That's wonderful. I am so glad you did that.
It breaks my heart that so many dogs are killed at shelters. I am on a lot of Yahoo animal rescue groups that operate around the country and I read all the postings about the dogs in kill shelters. I try to help when I can by doing animal transports for dogs going from shelters or fosters to forever homes.
