3. I thought so
I really wanted to be an amateur boxer for the longest time, I enjoy watching it, so much better than pro wrestling.

7. Who was your great uncle?
Boxing is a strange sport. For the most part, boxers are the nicest and most decent people on earth. Promoters and managers aren't. And the sport is ugly. But it's hard to ignore a good match. (Like this weekend's fights.)

9. yeah its hard to avoid a great match
Something about it that's almost poetic and stranger is that I consider myself very non violent and almost pacifistic.

11. Very common with boxers ....
...to be gentle, sensitive people outside the ring. I talk to Rubin "Hurricane" Carter late at night sometimes. Very rarely about the fight game. Usually about gardening. Now isn't that something?

I think a common thing is that boxers want to be "left alone" by aggressive people, and when those aggressive people know that a man can fight back, they back off.

I'm curious who the one fellow's great uncle is ..... my great uncle was a sparring partner for both Jack Sharkey and Jimmy Braddock. He found a tough kid on an onion farm in upstate NY, and taught the kid to box .... it was the great Carmen Basilio.

I fought over 300 bouts. I was in a few articles in magazines years ago. I remember Floyd Patterson saying one time that the sport is like a woman .... she can treat you real good, and real bad ... but even if you separate, you'll find yourself thinking about her!

12. The great Joe Louis!
I had just posted that my great uncle was a sparring partner for both Jack Sharkey and Jimmy Braddock. He helped Sharkey, a Binghamton native, prepare for Dempsey; and Jimmy, an Irish dock-worker from NYC, prepare for Joe. Of course, Dempsey and especially Louis were a big step above the other champions of their eras.

hah, you know something man, my grandfather remembers listening to his fights on the radio, and I think he's the one who helped spark my grandfather's interest in the sport.

14. I was very fortunate to meet him before he passed away
I lived in Vegas and the whole family is in Detroit.

He came home just before his last days and the entire family gathered to pay their respects.

It was a great day.

15. I bet
Real sorry that he died in debt as I read but I've read about the friendship between him and Schmelling, I guess some Germans aren't so bad :D. Glad you met him because I am sure he was a hero to so many kids back then.
