What am I missing here?

I was driving down a fairly busy street yesterday. It was busy enough that a bicyclist was travelling about the same speed as the traffic. As he passed me, he crashed, doing a complete somersault in the air and landing face first into some construction debris, raising a large cloud of dust. He made some attempt to protect himself by landing on his hands. His shoes flew off and part of his shirt ripped.

He picked himself up as I was driving by, so I slowed and yelled out the window "you OK?" He said "Oh yeah, I'm fine. This happens all the time."

I ride my bicycle often. I've never crashed on my current bike and only once on the previous one (and that was half-ways deliberate).

What am I missing here?
