Do you think P Diddy's Vote or Die Campaign is working?
And do think it's going to pull a lot of new young voters in for our side? I was thinking about this earlier. Kids like to imitate the crap they see in Hip Hop videos and the crap that those hip hop "artists" do, so will they vote to please their idols?

1. They might vote to emulate their idols.
Are they wearing the 'Vote or Die!' tee shirts in the videos?

P. Diddy and a bunch of other young celebrities were on Oprah this afternoon putting out a powerful message to the unlikely voters. I think it will make an impact.

3. Aww, SCREW!
Everytime I turn to Oprah these days it's some housewife who is trying to find herself. I always miss the cool Jude Law/voting/Christmas present shows. Dang.

6. Regardless of what one might feel about Oprah,
I think it's very cool of her to do a show like this.

I don't actually watch her all that much, but I got heads up that it was about voter registration and turn out today. Excellent show, and all good for our side.

8. I give her mad props for all the things
she has accomplished. I also think it's very cool that she did a show about voter registration.

I think she has taken full advantage of her fame, power to do good things.

I just personally don't like her. WHY?
I feel all "self-help" people like her, Dr. Phil, Dr. Laura, etc...are a bit self-righteous and the people who are "followers" are imo, in the same category of those who "followed" Manson or Koresh or someone like that.

I know this comparison is a tad odd but that's how I feel. Call me stubborn but I don't need someone on TV to tell me how I should live my life.

2. I hope it is
Regardless of what one might feel about P Diddy, I think it's very cool of him to start something like this.

Russell Simmons is another music industry type who is trying to get out the young and urban vote.

Hope it translates into new voters, hopefully all for Kerry, come Nov. 2

9. It's hard to say.
Generally, people who appreciate music that I don't appreciate are stupid, and don't care about issues. But maybe, because they're so stupid, they'll just vote because somebody famous said too.

10. I have to disagree with some of your statement
Well actually all of it. They're are plenty of artists in the so-called rap, hip-hop genre that are politically aware are who care and are concerned about the issues.

I think it's our goal and people in "show business" to educate those with no experience in how the political system works.

I think P Diddy and others are trying to do a great thing here. We need to support them in this process.

11. It's true.
First off, I love the whole Citizen Change thing. The graphics, the tie in with the music, it is great. Now if P. Diddy and Simmons can get their people turned out on Nov 2, we will owe them the an endless debt of gratitude. They will have reached a demographic that politicians have been unable to get in great numbers before. And saved our country.

I am new to hip hop. I have been trying to listen to it, just on the grounds that it is the most popular music on the planet and it is passing me by. I am really starting to like it. There seems to be allot of intelligent political sub-text in the limited amount that I have listened to.

12. Have heard "WHY" by Jadakiss yet?
There's two versions. Both politically charged.

Check it out.

14. A lot of "old school" hip hop
was more into political and social issues.
Some of today's stuff has a good beat and all but some of the artists are just looking to make a buck. Can't really blame them.

2PAC was a poet and dealt with a lot of various issues.
I know of just some of the mainstream groups, like Public Enemy but I know there a lot of underground rap groups that deal with a lot of political and social issues but I can't name bands, just cause I don't know what they're called.

Hey, at least you're being open-minded enough to try and listen to this type of music.
But your first post in this thread, still pissed me off. You sounded a bit ignorant.

15. Ignorant?
I just said that fans might emulate their idols. My meaning being that, in this case anyway, it was a positive thing. Oh well, sometimes meanings don't come across clearly on these message board. I should probably use more of those smiley thingies so people know I am cheerful.

Thanks for the music advice. :-)

And yes sometimes our messages don't come across clearly.
It just sounded ignorant to me until I started to read the other posts from you in this thread and I know you're not ignorant at all.

Peace

19. Last two events have not been great.
I am not actually registering all those people with my own two hands, more like coordinating the events for other volunteers. Anyway, I was on pace to do it, but then last week I let another volunteer pick the location and it was slow. I really needed 100, but got more like 25. I have an event to register homeless tomorrow night, but I am not sure how big that will come in. So next weekend will be the make or break. Just did the math, I need approx. 182, which is allot, but not undoable.

Really, it is just the inspiration of knowing that the last election was 'lost' by only 537 votes, and that one person could do that, could get 537 people to vote. And then one more and we would have won. So many people would still be alive, the environment would be cleaner, the world would be much better. So I am inspired that one person can change the world. It would be cool to make my goal, but anyway it happens, I will know that I stepped up to the plate, even if maybe I didn't hit the home run.
