Attention Bald Men... THIS MUST STOP NOW!
Edited on Tue Sep-09-03 07:47 AM by arwalden
Would it be rude, or would you be doing someone a favor if you gently told someone how much BETTER they would look without their comb-over hairstyle? (Too harsh? Am I the only one who thinks it looks silly?)

Flame me if you want... but why spend ALL THAT EXTRA EFFORT AND TIME to arrange your remaining hair to look silly? They could SAVE TIME and look good with a haircut that's appropriate for a balding head.

15. Beagle Bros. was (is?) a software company
I remember them from waaaay back in the day when I used to use an Apple II.

I like to think that arwalden included it as an example of a good haircut for a bald man!

3. As a bald man...
...I must say that I always found making believe that my wasn't falling out (now gone) pretty silly. I just shave it smooth. Takes years off my looks, too.

5. Shaved head is the most sensible new fashion
As a cartoon in the New Yorker said, "it takes the guesswork out of going bald."

9. I'm Voluntarily BUZZED...
There's still fuzz on top... but not enough to do anything with. So I opt for the Cal Ripken buzzcut look.

4. It would be sharper than a serpent's tooth.
Men are as sensitive about their hair as women about their weight. Now, would you tell a woman how much better she'd look if she'd just shed a few pounds or stop dressing as if she were Britney Spears? No, you wouldn't--not if you like your face the way it is.

When you see a spider hugging an egg, you'll just have to avert your eyes, I'm afraid.

7. I agree, forraldom.
Most of the guys I know who make fun of the comb-over have full heads of hair their own bad selves. Walk a mile in my scalp, why dont'cha?

10. Not all... HOWEVER....
Some were once comb-over addicts themselves. I guess it's like ex-smokers and born-agains, eh? Once they've seen the errors-of-their-ways, they become crusaders. LOL.

13. Nope... But I Flirted With The Dark Side...
... a couple of years ago when I was overdue for a haircut.

But sanity prevailed and when I realized that my (then) hairstyle wasn't right for the amount of hair I had left, I quit going to a $30+ stylist in the mall and started going to a $9 barber in old downtown.

14. No
but I would tell that woman that she would look better in pants suits than in mini skirts, life is about doing the best you can with what you've got.

Many times I've seen what I thought was a really good looking balding man who ruined his looks by having the hair flap. Same as an attractive plump woman who doesn't know how to dress. It is good to have some fashion guidelines and realize we're all not Barbie and Ken.

12. I'm one of the lucky Guys that started using Propecia
( a hair restoring drug) that really worked.

I was developing the classic bald head when my Doctor suggested I try Propecia.
The results have been Amazing....I got my original full head of hair back.
It's not cheap and takes a few months to really see if it works but (for me) it was wonderful.

16. Luckier if you buy Proscar and cut it up
It's the same drug, 5 times stronger for prostate enlargement than for hair growth. I got the dr. to prescribe it and saved most of the cost-- they really see the bald guys coming with those Propecia prices.

Worked great for me but after a couple of years no further results ensued so I reverted to Rogaine, which maintains OK but doesn't produce new growth.

20. In my age group
a lot of men are losing or have lost their hair. Frankly, at some point about five years ago, I noticed how much more attractive James Taylor is now with a significantly receding hairline than he was back in his very hairy days.

I'll take good, honest baldness over a comb-over (the Japanese call that hairstyle "the bar code") or God forbid, a toupe.

21. Wow....this brought a flash back
a couple of weeks ago I was on a job site and a work crew came there to do some land surveying. The guy leading the crew had a massive comb-over, from the top of both ears up to a freaking pompadour! And to top it off.......he had it long in the back! A comb over mullet, lord I have seen it all now, just wish I had taken a pic of it.

22. Okay, confession time...
I wear a hairpiece. Not exactly Hair Club for Men, but close. I am only 33, and when I was 29 and before I first started with the hairpiece, I looked over 40. Now I look my age. I will probably continue to wear one until I am actually in my forties. It is very expensive, but I think it's worth it. If anyone can tell, they haven't let on, and my family is pretty brutal. They wouldn't let me get away with wearing anything that looks stupid.

<Phew> It's good to get that off my chest. Thanks all.

I'll bet a dollar that if the fellows in these photos could actually SEE THEIR OWN HEADS from behind, they would stop with the combovers.

Oh... the price of vanity. Just think... you could be wasting that money on perfectly good cigarettes. LOL.

26. But, but, but....
I can't _see_ my bald spot - I've only heard rumors of it. & I'll bet the same is true of most of the poor slobs you have pics of. So I just comb the hair same as I always have. Is it 'combing over"? Dunno. I'd have to hold an back mirror up every time I comb it. And I'm not sure that's really worth it. At least teenage daughter isn't giving me grief, except about the bald spot, & I'm sure she would bring a combover to my attention.

32. I First Realized I Had A Bald Spot WHEN....
... when I was looking at recently developed photos of a small party I went to.

While glancing though them, I asked... who's the bald guy? Turns out it was ME!! The picture was taken from the elevated deck looking down on the folks sitting in lawn chairs below.

AAAAAH! There's still hair there... but I never realized how white and shiny it was until then.

Sigh.

27. The finest comb-over...
in cinema history can be found in the ridiculously funny "Kingpin" starring Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray.

During the climactic OdorEaters bowling tourney, Bill's must-be-seen-to-be-believed comb-over goes airborne in the most hilarious fashion -- you'd have to be in a vegetative coma not to be rolling on the floor.

As for real men who wear comb-overs, I feel incredibly sorry for them -- they need to be locked into Trini's and Suzannah's "What Not To Wear" chamber of mirrors until forced to acknowledge how badly they look and to submitt to a "flap removal".

28. If I had to run for office, I would probably get a rug
People judge you by your appearance, and hair represents youth and vitality. An advantage would be that I could take the toupee off and go out in public anonymously.

Fortunately for me, I have an incredibly thick beard that makes up for my hair loss.

35. But Have You Seen The Ones Where They Part It On BOTH Sides?
And then SWIRL the hair from both sides around on the top of their head like a dairy-queen twirl?

I wanted to reach up and tousel his hair... but it looked very stiff. He clearly had so much "product" on it that I might have cut myself.
