4. I'm told it sounds a lot like the bootlegs.
And of course, the bootlegs are extraordinary.

10. Good God, who sings Surf's Up?
It can't be Brian singing that high F ("columnated ruins domino"); must be Jeff Foskett?

11. Not sure which Wondermint does the falsetto
But it's not Brian. He does the lead for most of the piece, however when they break into harmony for that high note he stays in the midrange.

12. It's a shame, isn't it? He had such a beautiful falsetto.
Cigarettes played a role, certainly. But I think Brian is and always was embarassed by doing falsetto. You see that in his "gravel voice" on 15 Big Ones and Love You - he was trying to sound more manly.

But I still love that falsetto. In fact, one of my favorite tracks on the generally dismal MIU is "She's Got Rhythm," because it's got that great falsetto lead. "Laaaaaast night I went out disco dancin'..."

5. Check this out, then
They did a thing on NPR last Friday about it. Check it out. It sounded pretty cool. I'm not a fan at all but I'm probably going to pick it up.

6. There are about a million reviews linked
from the brianwilson.com page. Raves from many, many places, including a 5-star review from Rolling Stone. Apparently, this is the real deal.

13. My children were raised, you know they suddenly rise
They started slow long ago
Head to toe healthy, wealthy, and wise

God, I love those lyrics.

I've been listening to the SMILE album nonstop since yesterday. Brian's voice sounds better than it has in years, but sadly it's still not the Brian of old. Nonetheless, it's terrific to hear these songs finally put together in the way they were intended and with such great production. It truly is the pop symphony of the 20th century.
