1. Horace.
You've gotta love Horace.

Of course, Bob and Peter let the side down a bit. Maybe that's how come they died young, hmmm?

3. Like "Big," "U-" or "Toots?"
I like their nicknames better: "Scratch," "Wire," "Chinna."

6. Would Yellowman be considered
a first name? Or a last name?

Like...Bob Yellowman.... or Yellowman Smith?

Fudge is confused.

9. A lot of them seem to be colonial hangovers.
I think that explains Horace, Barrington, Winston et al.

15. That would also explain Bob, Peter,
Desmond, etc. In fact, nearly all of them are English names. So what's everyone's point?

18. So a 'normal' name for a reggae star
would be something like 'Abubakar', if they had a Nigerian heritage, or 'Kofi' for Ghanaian.

20. Not just the reggae boys.
I have a Jamaican friend named Cheslan.

Also, if you look at the Jamaican soccer team, you are treated to a Fitzroy, Hubert, Linval and Marlon.

Anyone have any idea where the names come from?

22. The soccer team ARE the Reggae Boyz!

http://www.thereggaeboyz.com/ ;-)

Fitzroy: Norman French surname (meaning 'son of the king', I think); used as a first name in Sherlock Holmes: "When, however, another morning had come, and I found that beyond the arrest of young Fitzroy Simpson nothing had been done, I felt that it was time for me to take action."

Hubert: Saxon for 'bright form'; previously used by Vice President Hubert Humphrey

Linval: possibly a French or Belgian surname; both soccer (Linval Dixon) AND reggae (Linval Thompson)! "On trouve aujourd'hui en Martinique une famille Cassius de Linval, qui semble originaire du Sud-Ouest, mais le nom Linval me demeure inconnu. On dirait évidemment un toponyme, mais je n'en trouve aucune trace. A noter que le nom Linval se rencontre dans le Nord et en Belgique." http://www.jtosti.com/noms/c3.htm

Marlon: Old French for 'little hawk' (ie 'merlin', I think); probably inspired by Marlon Brando
