Tech question:
I just got a Linksys Wireless-G Router, but I don't have any wireless stuff yet.

I do, however, have a high-speed connection for my desktop -- can I hook the router up to my desktop and delete my firewall software? It does have a built-in firewall, right?

1. I am not familiar with the Linksys router, but no, I would not think that
it has a built in firewall. My wireless router does not come bundled with a firewall. Unless it says that it does, I would assume that it does not. You can keep your firewall software though, and it shouldn't be a problem.

2. It does..
have a built in firewall. I have one myself, and it has done a better job than most software firewalls I've had of protecting without getting in the way.

3. What about this?
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=601

...To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Broadband Router can encode all wireless transmissions using 128-bit WEP encryption, and also supports industrial-strength Wi-Fi Protected Access™ (WPA) wireless security. The Router protects your PC from most known Internet attacks with a powerful Stateful Packet Inspection firewall. It can also serve as a DHCP Server, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet...

I'm still confused, though -- because the router came with Norton software on the setup disk. :(

4. don't do that
A desktop firewall is not entirely the same as a hardware firewall.
Both have their flaws, but for most things the software firewalls are easier to use. They are also easier to circumvent, but few trojans are actually able to do so.
To make things worse, most routers just come with NAT, which is another thing entirely - it is just called a firewall.

My desktop is rather old. :(
