Poll question: Who won the Cold War? (ie, for the West)
Remember: this is the Lounge; try to play it for laughs. Bush & Reagan are only on there for the singular pleasure of seeing them not get any votes.

2. Defense Contractors
bankrupted both nations, spread cancer/neurotixic/immunotoxic chemicals and radiation all over this country, got out of any liability for the damage done, dumped their toxic wastes into our waterways as cheap disposal but is still killing people and wildlife, redirected assets to killing research.
The pollution of our air, water and food will last a long time making it the deadliest war in human history.

5. The Truman Ad.
The winning policies were developed then and followed until the USSR collapsed. There were other factors of course beyond the US policies.

6. Lech Walesa and Solidarity in Poland.
That was what triggered the end. If it wasn't for that, the death may have been a lot slower, or maybe non-existant at all.

8. Billy Joel. If I were forced to listen to choose between that Long Island
iced pee (especially "Piano man" or "I love you just the way you are") or going communist, well, then "the socialist anti-imperialist worker's struggle is committed to the Marxist-Leninist dialetical struggle for the rise of the proletariat's dictatorship over the playlist."

I completely understand why Mr. Gorbachev et al surrendered. Raisa must have feared hearing "She's only a woman." I know I do.

"It's Still Rock & Roll To Me" :)

13. And I think Yeltsin climbed on that tank since its rumbling drowned out
"Only the Good Die Young" playing on the radio.

All those Russkies OD'd on the stuff & rotted their brains. Then McDonalds did the same to their muscles.

The program was called "Corporate Poison For Peace"

14. McDonalds
In the early 80's the McDonalds corporation announced they wouldn't open any new franchises in the US. They therefore had to develop foreign markets. The Soviet Union was in the way.

15. The "Freedom Fighters" in Afghanistan and
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 10:38 AM by Hubert Flottz
the union shipyard workers in Poland and their union leader! "Solidarity"

Today those "Freedom Fighters" would be called "Insurgents" and those union members would be called "Brown-shirt Gangster Thugs" by the Freeps and the neokkkon liars!

Shrub has led America into the same kind of trap in Iraq and Afghanistan, as the trap that bled the life out of the USSR! It costs some mega-bucks to take and hold several foreign countries at the same time! Wars on several fronts at the same time, have led to the downfall of many nations in the past! The tax giveaways to the rich in a time of war on several fronts, is a recipe for disaster, when coupled with the decline of America's industrial base, brought on by outsourcing! Bush seems to want to lose this war! The Neocons seem to want America to lose!

Edit} The Neokkkons hate us for our freedom!

16. USSR fell apart on its own really
It was like the final round of a boxing match. All the USSR needed was one solid punch in the gut and it was over. Reagan gave that final punch but I sure as hell wouldn't say he "defeated" the USSR. The destruction of the USSR was there own doing we just helped it along.

19. Gorbachev wanted reform, but not quite as much as he got.
Things went beyond what he could control.

Still Gorbachev was a great force.
