THIS IS PURELY CONJECTURE. I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE YET, SO I COULD BE WRONG.
You've probably seen the trailer on TV. It's the movie where Julianne Moore remembers things about her past that nobody else does, and you see people getting pulled up into the sky by some strange force. Don't read if you don't want to be potentially spoiled..... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * OK, my theory is this: The characters in the movie are characters in a story that it still being written, and Julianne Moore realizes what's happening. The world of the story exists in the writer's mind, and that's the world that we see in the movie. When the author goes back to the story and changes something, the character that gets taken out of the story disappears from the world, as if they never existed, and none of the characters except for Julianne and Other Guy remember them. When she rips the wallpaper to reveal that the room she's in used to be a child's, that means that the child has been taken out of the story, but they still exist someplace in the writer's mind.
It's like in The Sixth Sense, where the ghosts don't know they're dead, but Haley Joel Osment can see them. In The Forgotten, none of the people in the movie know they're just characters in a story that isn't finished being written yet, but Juilanne Moore remembers things after the author changes them.
This could turn out to be a pretty cool movie...
