I was threatened with arrest... for pumping gasoline! Yes, I'm serious!
LMAO!!

Whenever I have to run into the city, I make a point to stop and fill up at the Mobil station (because I get 3% back for the uPromise college account). I almost running late for a client meeting, so I whipped into the station while offering thanks that there was a free pump. I pulled out the credit card, fired up the pump and proceeded to clean some trash from the car. I was heading back from the trash can when a city cop pulled up beside me.

"Are you really getting gas?" (I had no idea what he was talking about and was hoping he wasn't going to make a potty-joke.)

"Yeah."

"Well, aren't you lucky?"

"It's a buck-eighty per gallon -- I'm not sure if that makes me lucky or not." (He didn't smile.)

"You're so lucky that I'm gonna give you a free ride downtown."

"WHAT?!?!"

As it turns out, the Mobil station was CLOSED -- sign in the window and the whole bit. I assured the officer that I had used my credit card and invited him to wait with me until the pump was done and the receipt printed.

When it did print, he looked almost disappointed. LOL!!

Why in the hell was a gas station closed in the middle of the day and why would they leave the pumps on?

3. That is crazy shit
At least he was reasonable enough to wait for the receipt. Wonder if he hung around until the owners got back?

4. I was threatened with arrest once
Just because I jumped some guy from behind, beat him with a brick and stole his wallet. Some people are so touchy.

13. Ah, the Fighting Irish
Have nothing compared to the Fighting Amish. Damn Amish hooligans and their "Born to Raise Barns" tattoos and trying to squeal their buggy tires when they blow by the local Dairy Queen.

Some pervert in the park tells me, "I'lll give you 50 bucks if you'll hurt me." I said, "What're ya some kind of masochist?" He says, "yeah!" So I took his money and walked away.

5. I had the Border Patrol do that once to me.
Dude thought it was the wildest thing, that you could get gas from a station that was closed.

He also wondered what the hell a gringo was doing driving down NM 9 in the middle of the night, but frankly, I began to wonder that same thing as well.

12. Pumping gas is dangerous.
My mother once didn't do something right paying with a card at the pump and when she drove away, the owner of the gas station chased her down! And he was a real jerk, so she says. Like a 65 year old woman is doing a gas and go. Whatever, punk. :eyes:

15. Welcome to Oregon!
It's Illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon and New Jersey. I can only figure that they dont want you to get rained on so they let the attendants do the work for you...

16. I love it! I figure it provides jobs for people, and it's nice to not get
Diesel fuel on my hands. I traveled to Seattle a few weeks ago and near Tacoma I sat in a gas station for about five minutes before I remembered i wasn't in the land of Full Service.

18. That's Interesing
How do they pay for attendants? Does your price of gas go up?
Doubt we could get something like that in CA if its going to cost more...the Governator can't stand paying so much to fill his HumVee as it is

26. The price of gas here is higher than the national average, I believe,
but not as high as in California. I dunno how the attendants are paid, but it's nice to have people out and about the pumps; it's a much more civilized place than most mega-petro islands. My own view is that the price of gas should have been 3.00 a gallon for the past 25 years, including a heavy tax going to build transportation infrastructure, mostly rail.

21. It's safer that way
Every DAMN TIME I get gas, someone at another pump is either smoking, getting in and out of the car, using their cell phone, leaving the engine running or they've set the handle lock then just walked away.

The first four things can cause an explosion, and the last one can let gas spill on the ground if the release doesn't work right--like it didn't for the guy next to me last time I went.

When you ask them to stop doing whatever it is they're doing--gas fires tend to cause third-degree burns over 70 percent of your body, and I don't want one of those--they look at you like "who are you to tell me what to do?"

It would be nice if NC had that law they have in Oregon and New Jersey.

Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 07:29 AM by arwalden
I've always found that to be a bit odd... but at least they never have to worry about eager law enforcement officers gunning down innocent folks who pay by credit card.

Got bored writing 32-in-a-30 tickets so he staked out the gas station.

The thing is, I bet when he discovered the lights were off but the pumps were on, that he went home and brought his SUV and tanked it up befor running his "stake-out"...

Fucking pig. Instead of securing the premises, he sits back like a trap-door spider, waiting for clueless folks...

24. My mother was almost arrested at a gas station.
But it was because she knocked over a pump and set fire to the place.

She was having a very bad day.

30. Yeah, nobody was hurt.
The worst part about it was my dad - he was a volunteer fireman on duty at the time. He got there first pushed mom's car out of the way, then got his own car stuck in the mud next to the gas station.

When the cop arrived he asked who the fireman was, and my dad said "Thats me."

"Whose car started all this?"

"Thats mine."

"And whose car is stuck in the mud over there?"

"Well, thats mine, too."

...

His friends at the fire hall NEVER let him forget.

25. If it was pay at the pump, then after you scan the card...
the pump starts automatically. What a stupid cop. He should have known that if you were pumping gas, you MUST have used a credit card. Dumbass. Those pay at the pumps are all over around here...including those that are ONLY pay at the pump. They're like 10 cents cheaper than anywhere else...very little overhead. Anyway. Again, what a dumb ass cop.

Those are the states that will not let you pump.

On edit, I realized that it had nothing to do with pumping laws, but rather a nonsense issue involving a mysteriously closed gas station and an overzealous cop

to make sure that the place is open. The cop should've taken you downtown and taught you a lesson.

There definitely are a fraction of cops who got into it for the power, and they are the reason IA is absolutely necessary.

33. Gassing with credit cards is common in Wisconsin
When the stations are closed, some leave the pumps open for credit card customers.

Not sure why your gas station was closed during the day, though.
