All this coughing has screwed my bad shoulder again
I've dislocated it twice and so it gets sore after a sneeze or weather change...I've got a cold right now so all the coughing has made it ache.
Any treatment advice?

6. I rehabbed my rotator cuff with exercises.
I had "laxity of the shoulder", which meant that the ligaments were stretched out. I never dislocated it, but it was out of alignment. I could not kayak. I did all these exercises for the muscles around the joint with names like supraspinatus. It took many months.

13. Fifteen years later, and I don't have to do them anymore!
I have a different shoulder problem now (bone spur). My orthopedic doc said that when one gets older than 40, the ligaments tighten up (one becomes less flexible) and they won't "stretch out of shape" so easily. How about that?

When I was 27, I first had the problem (laxity). It came back when I quit exercising, so I had to start therapy again at 31.

19. rice packs for heat for the shoulder; rice and vicks packs for the chest.
Rice packs:

take a clean tube sock - the longer the better - and fill to a soft consistency with plain rice. We usually do 2-3 cups/ 500-750 ML to a knee length tube sock. Knot or sew the open end shut.

Heat in microwave for 3 minutes, until sock is nice and warm. Wrap around joint.

Rice and vicks packs: Make a rice pack. While it's in the microwave, smear a paper towel with vicks vapo-rub or, if it is not a skin irritant for you, smear it on your chest. (Chest hair may be a problem....?) wrap paper towel and rice pack in a soft towel and lie down. Put pack on chest and breathe carefully, concentrating on breathing smoothly and without coughing. 4-5 counts in, 4-5 counts out.

Drink LOTS of water to help thin the mucus and keep body hydrated.
