Getting wisdom teeth out, need soft food suggestions
I'm getting all four wisdom teeth out on Monday. Today or tomorrow I will be shopping for suitable foods. Any interesting suggestions besides the usual smoothies, pudding, yogurt, applesauce? I am vegetarian, so no meat, but I do eat eggs. Thanks.

4. Pudding? Yogurt?
You probably won't be allowed to eat dairy products.

8. Didn't say anything about that in the brochure.
Is there a reason why?

12. I'm not sure
Edited on Sat Sep-18-04 10:42 AM by Kellanved
All I know is that I wasn't allowed to eat any dairy products for a few days after they had pulled my wisdom teeth.
The stated reason was that they would hinder proper healing and carry a high risk of infection.

Edit:
I had nothing to eat on the first day, soy based (baby) porridge and bananas then.

14. Thanks. I'll be sure to ask about that.
I'm hoping I'm be able to eat a little. Though maybe this will turn into a quick diet. ;-)

15. Hm...the dentist told my parents to drive through McDonald's and get me a
milkshake (which I realize may or may not be actual milk) on my way home (numbing, get my blood sugar back up), and just make sure I spooned it rather than sucked it through a straw (straws are no-nos for wisdom-teeth healing). I did only have local anesthetic, though; don't know if that makes a difference.

16. local only anesthetic too, in my case
I googled a little. The line is on almost all German language post-oral-surgery advisories, but only on very few American ones. If the Surgeon says that it is OK to have milk, then I'm inclined to believe it.

18. Hm -- is most milk pasteurized in Germany?
It has to be here (unless it carries a big scary "RAW MILK WILL KILL YOU" disclaimer, so you don't see it outside of farm markets very often, and usually not even then).

Sold in one liter bottles or cartons and tastes not as good, but it is pretty much the same otherwise.

Maybe it was because they weren't pulled, but cut open and chiseled out... .

On Edit: Yogurth however is often sold "alive".

5. Don't suggest applesauce. ..
get veggy broth and boil up with some of those tiny, tiny round or alphabet noodles you can swollow whole..
Do not attempt anything with choclate-- stings like the dickens.
Goopy thick things like yogurts and ice cream I found hard to swallow.

Some people go out the night of and party.. it just depends..

any compacted?

6. For the first day or so
Edited on Sat Sep-18-04 10:35 AM by cmf
While the clots are still forming, you don't want to eat any hot food or drink, or drink through a straw. I ate a lot of yogurt, pudding and apple sauce. Afterward, I had a lot of mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, polenta with sauce, soup (tomato and potato soup are two good options), soft pasta like cheese ravioli. The whole experience wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Good luck!

ETA: Dairy is really good! Make sure you eat before taking your first painkillers so you won't get sick. I found dairy foods to be the most soothing to my stomach.

7. Ice cream is one of the four basic food groups
Bananas are soft. Banana bread is probably soft enough, if you leave out the walnuts. Brownies too. You can bake meringues using the egg whites, and they'll melt in your mouth.

It's a horribly rainy day here, so I'm thinking real hard about excuses to turn the oven on and make the kitchen smell good.

9. Ouch
I remember eating a lot of soup when the dentists had their way with my wisdom teeth. Tomato soup is a big comfort food for me.

11. Good Luck!
Soup, mashed potatoes, Stouffers has some neat frozen "side dishes" like creamed spinach and potatoes au gratin (the potatoe cubes are really small) that might work well.

17. If you get canned fruits
They are all nice and soft, you can basically squish them between your tongue and the roof of your mouth, no chewing required!

I was so drugged up the first day/night that I barely ate anything. After that, fruits, yogurt, pudding, soft bread....

19. Are you going to have a general anesthetic or just a local?
If you're fully under, you probably won't be eating much for a day or two (if you're like me and get super-nauseous for general). For me, I was able to re-introduce most foods after 48 hours (OK, not corn on the cob or raw carrots or that sort of thing, but most not-completely-hard foods).

Most soups will be OK (noodles in canned soups are usually soft anyway), as will mashed potatoes, creamed spinach...Good luck.

21. Spinach, Ricotta, Olive Oil, garlic, butter, shells, and a few herbs
maybe a tomato or eggplant and or zucchini sauteed to a soft delectable baba ganoush or ratatouille like event with onions and leeks.

Yummy.

I AM GOING TO MAKE SOME RIGHT NOW.

23. I just had mine out- I did Carnation Instant Breakfast made with soy milk
for the first few days. I was able to do a couple spoonfuls of applesauce on day two. But it was rough.

I did some vegetable broth. I mainly drank stuff, but I even found that painful and difficult.

It really sucks. I get queasy just thinking about it.
