Poll question: Best 80s Movie?
So my hatred for nostalgia only goes so far, call me a hypocrite if you must. At least I picked mostly movies I actually love. My pick is Real Genius, as my dad and I would watch it literally every time it was ever on cable.

P.S. If you choose Pretty In Pink, you are the devil.

1. You're kidding, right?
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 01:25 AM by NightTrain
The best films of the '80s would have to include "Ordinary People," "Gallipoli," "Reds," "Gandhi," "Sophie's Choice," "The Gods Must Be Crazy," "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "The Last Emperor," "Broadcast News," and "Crimes and Misdemenaors," to name but a few. There's no way any of that teen fluff you listed could possibly qualify as the best films of the decade!

2. Dude, I'm talking movies that are rooted in the 80s
All the movies you mentioned transcend the decade. The ones I picked are firmly rooted in the 80s, and even if you hadn't grown up in them, you'd be able to pick that out within about thirty seconds of watching it.

Those are all actual GOOD movies, save perhaps The Gods Must Be Crazy, which is wildly overrated.

5. See above
Lynch's stuff, particularly Blue Velvet, transcends the time when it was released.

6. Porky's?
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 01:42 AM by BurtWorm

Wouldn't it be more interesting to try to come up with movies that were actually good? I can't remember all that many from the 1980s that actually were all that good.

Melvin and Howard
Something Wild
Matewan
Modern Romance
Blue Velvet

and then I start to draw a blank.

7. I hate Porky's
When American Pie came out, I told anyone who listened what a travesty it was that they were trying to inflict a new Porky's on this generation like they inflicted Porky's on mine.

Same goes for the Police Academy movies, of which I've seen every god damn one. I must be a masochist.

8. Desperately Seeking Susan
is quintessentially 1980s, and was actually pretty good. So was Married to the Mob. And Batman, now that I think of it.

26. A few more
"Out of Africa", "Terms of Endearment", "Kramer vs. Kramer", "Amadeus" and many others as well. I enjoyed some of the teen fluff - and in that category would put "Sixteen Candles" over "The Breakfast Club" - but wouldn't call them great.

I'm one of two votes so far so I am a co-devil. I couldn't let you guys diss the classic Porky's without some type of revenge, Porky's style.
