Archives reveal terrible story today....
I got a phonecall from a guy today asking about information on an accident in the area that took place in 1975. Eleven people were killed in this one accident, 8 of them were one family. The guy who phoned was a brother of the father of the family.
So, he wanted a copy of the article and I went through the archives and found it. Crazy stuff, three people died in one car as a result of the collision, but the family was stuck in their car as people tried to free them, then the gas tank exploded and the entire family burned to death.

God isn't that awful?
It sent a chill up my spine.

Thank god cars are safer these days.

2. Safer?
I don't know if they are safer now in the UK, HEYHEY. What I do remember is that they used to claim that the public wouldn't be prepared to pay the little extra to have stronger tanks.

Then it was revealed that the British public was being ripped off by the manufacturers and dealers to the tune of thousands of pounds on all models, in comparison with Europeans abroad! We have an expression, "Rip-off" Britain, as the same applies to a lot of other products. CDs are another extraodinary case of looting. But imagine having the gall to blame the public for being too tight-fisted to pay an extra say... £12... for stronger petrol tanks!

Cars are way safer now
Crumple zones, airbags, and just plain common sense like not putting dashboards at head level have made them much safer. Back in the 70s and before they were crazy dangerous.

(we say rip-off) here too.

5. Misleading subject title of mine
I was just talking about tanks on cars in the UK, and that the term, "rip-off" specifically in connection with Britain. Not questioning your post. Sorry. My subject title was misleading.
