I want to live in Europe and need some advice!
With all the stress of my final year in college, studying for the LSAT's, the upcoming election, etc., I have been giving living abroad a lot of thought. Me and my best friend are considering moving to either Copenhagen, Zurich, or Paris for a year to get away from all the stress here at home and also broaden our culture base. We are not talking permanently, but more like one or two years tops. However, since I've only been to these destinations as a tourist, I don't know how to approach going about this.

Has anyone here on DU lived or worked in Europe and could give me some advice? Since I am graduating, I don't believe I can obtain a student visa. I have enough saved to fly there and back plus a few months rent, but I know we won't be able to afford to live there an entire year with just our savings so a job will be necessary.

So to all you savvy travelers -- Any advice on where I should start? Any places you would recommend?

2. I live in Germany (was born here)
Zurich will be extremely expensive, as will be the alcohol in Copenhagen. Paris is certainly nice, but I guess many Germans are more fluent in English than the French.
The most important question would be, I think, where you want to work, or if you want to do an internship. In which industry do you want to work?

Berlin is quite nice also, rents are low, night life and cultural life are interesting -- but there are certainly fewer jobs than in Frankfurt.

3. Really,
it doesn't matter what industry. We just want to get out so bad, that we are keeping every path open. :P The reason why I suggested Paris is because I speak French fluently and Zurich is where I used to live when I was a child. I too lived in Germany for a few years while in elementary school, but the only German language I know are the numbers and "hello." haha

My friend suggested Copenhagen after he visited there on a high school trip in 2001.

6. Then Paris seems to be a good choice
but I know nothing about how to get a job there. I assume there will be some US companies. As France is a centralized state, every headquarter will probably be in Paris...

5. I feel the same way.
I have a friend who lives and works in England. My wife and I went to visit him three years ago and were so taken with England that we would love to relocate there. Maybe not forever, but for a while at least.

We thought about trying to teach High School at DOD facilities around the world, but couldn't find anyone who wanted to talk to me about it.

9. You
could always just call the DOD directly about it. I would do it in a heartbeat if I was in your position :)

7. You might want to consider the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
The weather is good there, there's a lot of English-speaking people there, prices are fairly good, and the Spanish people are very friendly.

Hi,

Move to Copenhagen....it's wonderful. It's my favorite city in the world.

Why? Great people, great food, beautiful surroundings.....ahhh to be there now.
