Etiquette when greeting newbies...new DUers please advise
Many, many DUers graciously welcome new DUers to this board. I hope that makes new DUers feel welcome because this can sometimes be a rather intimidating place.

But...I'm annoyed when someone welcomes someone with over 50 to 75 posts to the board. Sometimes someone is welcomed when they have over a 100 posts. It seems condescending to me. After the first 25 posts, they are no longer new. They are part of our community. I know when I got my first 100 posts I felt like I was part of the community and I would have been insulted if I was still considered a newbie.

3. If I haven't seen someone before, I will sometimes say hello
even if they have a somewhat higher post count.

Just as we would in a room full of people, it's still nice to greet the newbies, even if they have been here a bit. Especially since it's just a "Hi and welcome to DU!"

Always appopriate, I think. I've been at jobs, working in larger offices, in which I might meet someone for the first time after being there a couple months. And have often been welcomed to the company by those people. I thought it was nice.

:hi: Cally!

I couldn't have expressed it more eloquently than Rabrrr. It's not meant to be condescending or offensive and I hope it hasn't been intrpreted in that way by the person who is being welcomed

And now I understand what Rabrrr started that other thread for you

No offense intended.

8. Hmm.
I try not to be condescending. If I welcome someone with 50-75 posts, or say around 100, it's not that I don't think they're part of the community. It's just that I probably haven't seen them around before.

I figure it's more of a better late than never type of thing. I'd be curious to see how others felt about it. I don't mean anything bad by it but if it's offensive I'll stop.

9. Why should it matter . Really , let people say " welcome " when they want
Often times I see someone with 50 or so posts that " I " myself may have never seen before ... They may post in other forums that I might not post in . No one should ever be intimidated or insulted to be a newbie . After all we are were one at some point . No one is born with 1000+ posts . Let people welcome people as long as they want , let people be nice as long as they want , thats the DU way .

10. ahem...
What's a newbie anyway?

Someone could post 50 times in two days while it might take someone with less time to spend on the internet, or with less to say, two weeks to post that many. Others, like myself, have been coming here a long time to read articles but just recently joined the forum.

I don't think it's insulting to be considered a newbie even if you are not...Why should it be condescending? So what if after 100 posts, someone still thinks you are new?

talk about a molehill. the LAST thing we need are rules of etiquette. that just makes it seem more phony anyway.

and in closing...

WELCOME TO THE DU CALLY!

30. yeah
I can't understand how some people build up their post counts so quickly. I've been making a conscious effort to post whenever something occurs to me, just to up my post count, but I'm still woefully short.

Nevertheless, I don't mind when people greet me. I think it's kind of nice.

:hi:

Don't worry about the post count thing - took me forever to get to 100, then to 700, then to 1000. After about post 3 or 4 thousand, though, they started flying out willynilly at an amazing pace.

And it seems that it just gets to be faster and faster and faster.... esepcailly as I became comfortable with more people, and more people with me, and I could start making inane senseless comments.

I just started posting the other day.

I dunno how my post number went up ao quickly.

I made a lot of stupid jokes which saved me the trouble of having to say anything thoughtful.

The Lounge threads are good for that kind of thing

those are what sucked me in and inflated my post count. And I think as you come to know more people, you respond more to what they say.

Although, I do chime in on serious matters that I feel strongly about.

33. I posted in the Lounge asking if I was still a newbie with 1100 posts
I spent my first month here 24/7 in an attempt to rapidly build up my post count because I was quite intimidated at times, especially when the trolls would come and DU got paranoid. I also asked if I really belonged here while in the 700 Club for similar reasons.

So yes, it can be very reassuring to be welcomed to the board.

There are times when I still feel like a newbie, and I've been here for 6 months and have almost 2000 posts...

I think 100 or so is still kind of "newbie" status. Sometimes people post mostly in one forum too, so they are "new" in other forums. It's nice to feel welcome, but that's the democratic style :)

47. I understand what you're saying but I don't mind too much
I got welcomed after my 60th or so post by someone. It seemed odd for a minute because I already feel pretty deeply immersed in this site, but it was still a very sweet gesture. Certainly compared to 40,000 posts I AM a newbie! Anyway, it's always nice to be greeted warmly. Maybe if you come across someone for the first time but they've already posted 50+ times, you could say "Hi , this is the first time I've run across one of your posts but I see you're settling in nicely here. I hope you're enjoying our little community..." or something like that.

In any case it was better than when someone called me a coward for considering moving out of the country if Bush wins again! I will say that this person seems to be in the minority though, most people have been very kind and welcoming. I got invited to a DU gathering in Chicago on my first day!

50. I think it might depend on the person.
I seem to be racking up posts pretty quickly (I just joined yesterday). But I bet that there are some people who it takes a year to get 100 posts. The thing is, you can't really tell how long someone has been a DU poster by their number of posts.

Feel free to welcome me, by the way. :)
