Report: Mushroom Cloud Seen After N.Korea Explosion
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&e=1&u=/nm/20040912/ts_nm/north_korea_explosion_dc

SEOUL (Reuters) - A mushroom cloud up to 2.5 miles in diameter was seen after an explosion in a remote area of North Korea (news - web sites) near the border with China, Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday, quoting sources in Beijing.

The South Korean news agency said Thursday's blast in Kimhyungjik county in Yanggang province appeared to much worse than a train explosion that killed at least 170 people in April.

South Korean intelligence officials said they were monitoring the report, but declined detailed comment.

Has anyone heard anything at all about this?

4. Cue the Chicken Littles.
This could be anything-not to mention 9/9 was the anniversary of NK's inception. Sounds like Kim-Jong Il is doing a bit of showboating, if you ask me. Still kind of freaky, though.

SEOUL, South Korea - A large explosion occurred in the northern part of North Korea (news - web sites), sending a huge mushroom cloud into the air on an important anniversary of the communist regime, a South Korean news agency reported Sunday.

The Yonhap news agency, citing an unidentified source in Beijing, said the explosion happened Thursday in Yanggang province near the border with China. The explosion in Kim Hyong Jik county blasted a crater big enough to be noticed by a satellite, the source said.

"We understand that a mushroom-shaped cloud about 3.5 to 4 kilometers (about 2-2 1/2 miles) in diameter was monitored during the explosion," Yonhap quoted an unidentified diplomatic source in Seoul as saying.

North Korea was founded Sept. 9, 1948. Leader Kim Jong Il uses the occasion to stage performances and other events to bolster loyalty among the impoverished North Korean population.

Experts have speculated that North Korea might use a major anniversary to conduct a nuclear-related test, though there was no immediate indication that Thursday's reported explosion was linked to Pyongyang's efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

Kim Hyong Jik is reported to hold a major missile base. North Korea, which has a large missile arsenal and more than 1 million soldiers, is dotted with military installations.

8. If this happend on Thursday
Why are we just now learning about it from South Korea? The US had to of known about it as soon as the seismic activity and the mushroom cloud were picked up by US equipment. If this were Kim showboating on 9/9, he wouldn't keep it a secret, and I wouldn't think the US would either. Sounds like a major fuck up happened at their missle base.

11. Or they are testing...
It's only a matter of time before we are attcked by someone. We've pissed off the world. Someone will attack, and Bush will say something dumb like "they hate our freedoms!"

Hope everyone is putting together a survival kit.

the remains would be in the atmosphere and easily identified. If it was underground it be noted also.

FYI. Any explosion can create a "mushroom cloud". Hot gases rise vertically. When inevitably the gases cool it spreads to form the top of the mushroom.
