Stole a bunch of licks from Paul Desmond's version of it too.

I'll leave the actual question for someone else.

I'm playing a Coltrane celebration on the 23rd...and I'm using a TAPE of his voice, but I'm not sacrificing my "precious integrity" :)
I'm just feeding the player's speaker into my guitar's pickup and looping that bit. Then I'm just gonna play a solo over "the vamp" by the bassist and drummer. See, I'm coming around :)

If so - Monk.

I think Herbie Hancock wrote a tune w/a similar title, but I'm not sure.

Anyone: Is Johnnie Mercer the guy who put lyrics to it (Monk's version)?

I like his intro. I think a lot of cats still play it that way. I can't remember if that's in the real book, intro and all.

To me the best version is Eric Dolphy's.

31. 'A' Train
is always creditied to Strayhorn, but these Ellington masterpieces were often collaborations.

I am always wrong about these things, but I thought "Round About Midnight" was a Coltrane album tilte, but the song "'Round Midnight" is a Monk compositon.

Proud to call Trane and Monk fellow Tarheels!

80. JMO
but, as a long time fan I don't see either Duke or the Count as being truly great technicians. Neither was Miles.

So on that basis, along with style and gift of melody, I was thinking Hawkins, even more than Bechet.

But dammit, most of the surveys probably do say Parker!

92. Well, I would say Duke because
he was a very good musician, yes....but his compositions, in bredth, depth, and swingability, really expanded the vocabulary of the possible in jazz music.

On pure technique, there are many I'd prefer to Duke or Basie--and that's just on the keyboards!
