CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - An intruder dubbed "Spiderman" sneaked past tight security at Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's palace to try to contact the populist leader before being nabbed by guards, authorities said on Thursday.
The arrest of the man last week inside Miraflores Presidential Palace followed another recent embarrassment when a group of military guards was drummed out of a personal protection squad for Chavez on charges of insubordination.
Authorities said the suspect made it past several security cordons to a "critical area" in an attempt to hand a letter to Chavez, but never come in contact with the president.
"He was in a zone guarded by our officials. Once he violated the area, immediately he was detained, presented before a court and was later released," State Security police official Alberto Martinez said.
