Computer help needed
I'm down here in S. Florida visiting my folks. Before I left to visit I took a bunch of photos using my digital camera and transferred them to a CD.

For some reason, the jpegs won't open on my folks computer.

I am using windows XP at my place, they are running windows 98.

any help ya'll ?

Thanks in advance.

I have to go now. We're buying gas and putting shutters back up tomorrow...

1. How are you trying to open them?
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 08:23 AM by Misunderestimator
By double clicking on them, or by going into a photo editor (like windows paintbrush) and doing a file open? My guess is that the PC doesn't have *.jpg or *.jpeg set up with a default program to open them (which is required in order to open with a double-click).

If you double-click and get a window telling you that there is no default program, you can choose one there and make it default, OR you can just open the photo editor program and open them through file open.

2. Try this:
Open up the folder with the pictures using Windows Explorer or the My Computer view. Right-click on a picture file, and see if you get an option to "Open With...". If so, click on that, and select Internet Explorer. There should be a checkbox to "Always use this program to open this file type." (or something like that). Check it.

4. If you don't get an "open with" option with right click, hold down shift
key and then right click on the file. That will get the "open with" option for you.

3. Did you close out the CD... "Finish it" or did you leave it so that
additional photos could be added to it.

If you haven't closed it out.... only a CD Recorder will be able to see the TOC with the appropriate software of course.

My CD's made with Adaptec's Easy CD Creator can not be read by an ordinary CDROM until they are "finished or closed".

Adaptec's Direct CD will not work on my Windows 2000 install....

and as far as interoperability between Windows and Linux goes.... that is another story entirely.

5. Maybe a file extension problem?
If the extension on the files is "jpeg" and not just "jpg" you may need to change it to view them in Windows 98. Also, you need a third-party utility to view them, since the only Windows application you can view .jpg's in in 98 is Internet Explorer. Try Paint Shop Pro...shareware, and a free download. http://www.jasc.com

7. jpg files aren't "associated" with a functional application.
Download Irfanview (it's free, no spyware) and it will set itself up as the default app for you. Irfanview is good and gets a lot of  reviews.

I think I'm going to have to download some software to make this happen...right now the folks' computer doesn't even recognize that there is a CD installed...

10. By CD do you mean...
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 08:05 PM by D__S
A CD-R or a DVD? If your parents are running Win 98 (which is what I'm running), chances are that it's an older computer with a CD reader (won't read DVDs). If that's the case there's nothing you can do except: install a DVD drive on your parents computer... or burn your photos on a CD-R.

If your photos are on a CD-R, and your parents computer has a CD reader, then it's possible the drivers need updating.

On edit... One last thought. Do you have the camera with you now? Did you delete the photos you wanted to show them? If their TV isn't that old, you should be able to plug the camera right in and view the pictures that way.
