YIKES! Hurricane Ivan DAMAGED 90% of homes in Grenada
Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 07:56 AM by underpants
12 dead

Buildings lay in ruins Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, following the passage of Hurricane Ivan over Grenada on Tuesday in this image made available from the British Royal Navy. The most powerful hurricane to hit the Caribbean in nearly a decade killed at least 12 people in Grenada, damaged 90 percent its homes and destroyed a prison that left criminals running loose, officials said Wednesday. The most powerful hurricane to hit the Caribbean in 10 years damaged 90 percent of the homes in Grenada and destroyed a 17th century stone prison that left criminals on the loose as looting erupted, officials said Wednesday.

The escaped convicts included politicians jailed for 20 years for killings in a 1983 left-wing palace coup that led the United States to invade Grenada.

"We are terribly devastated ... It's beyond imagination," Prime Minister Keith Mitchell said from aboard a British Royal Navy vessel that rushed to the rescue.

1. "Damaged" and "Destroyed" may be close in the dictionary.

But they aren't the same word.

On edit: And what's with this: "The escaped convicts included politicians jailed for 20 years for killings in a 1983 left-wing palace coup that led the United States to invade Grenada."

Do they have a problem with math in Grenada?

she wasn't able to contact anyone there and the Red Cross wasn't able to help her.

This is horrible.

6. I heard on the news that they thought the casualty rate was low.
Most people evacuated early into shelters.

Beautiful island...I visited there a few years ago. The hotel next door was in ruins...I asked did they have a hurricane recently. They said oh, about 5 years ago. They seemed pretty used to them.

Hope your friends family is okay.

9. That is what I've told her
They all knew that Ivan will be horrific and surely got into shelters in time.

That must be terrible not knowing and not being able to communicate with them. Best wishes to her and her family.
