.edu - educational institutions
.com - businesses, for-profit organisations
.gov - government
.mil - military
.org - nonprofit organisations

9. yes... now people get .com because it is embedded in the culture
it's easier to tell somebody an address is .com rather than .org

12. That is also historical

Early in the commercialization phase of the Internet, everyone
wanted a DOT-COM domain simply because 90 percent of the domains
were .com, so people automatically put this in to whatever clever
name one came up with. Wouldn't matter it you were really
a commercial operation or not, you had to register blahblahblah.com
as well as .org and, usually, .net.
