I have always heard that if you wear pants or shorts with belt loops, then you SHOULD WEAR A BELT!!!!

Not true with

a. Jeans
b. Shorts (Unless you are wearing a preppy getup, the a belt can work, but is not needed)
c. Cases where the shirt isn't tucked in and nobody would know.

Otherwise, yes. Sometimes no one will notice. But other times you will look simply ridiculous (if it's a dress shirt and nice slacks for instance).

and I always tuck in. Unless, I'm working in the yard or something. Guess that's just the female influences I've had...

...but I think if the shirt is tucked in, you almost always need a belt. I say almost because there's probably some exception out there I haven't thought of.
