Snow and rain

:hi: I live in Buffalo, NY. In the winter, it occasionally snows here.

Given all the news about Frances, I would like to know the snow v rain conversion factor. IOW, how much snow would 8" of rain represent. Average snow - not dense, good packing snowball snow or loose, powdery good skiing snow.

1. i've heard

the average conversion is 1" or rain = 10" of snow. but can be much higher or lower depending on temperature.

2. I've heard 1" of rain equals one foot of snow.....but

I'm sure it depends on the temperature. Cold dry snow being fluffier than wet snow.
