9. Low budget blues...
Normally I am a Maker's Mark drinker, tried and true...

But the scarcity of coin has forced me to lower my standards to a whisky that I don't even remember the name of.

Bah, I hope I don't wake up blind.

Salut!

TRUE STORY

The first time I tried Maker's Mark, I was on a commercial flight going from NY to Canada.

I asked for a 'Rye and Coke'.

The stewardess said 'What?'.

I said, a 'Rye and Coke'.

She gave me a blank look for a few seconds, then blinked and said, 'OK'.

When she came back she plopped a really weird looking concoction down in front of me. It looked like mud.

I said, 'What's that?'

She said, 'A Hawaiian Coke, that's what you asked for.'

To this day, I do not know what she put in front of me.

I said, 'No, a RYE and COKE, you know, a WHISKY and COCA-COLA'.

Blank look again.

Then, a startling realization; 'OH you mean a SOUR MASH and Coke!'

Before I could sample the 'Hawaiian Coke' she hurriedly snatched it off of my tray and later returned with a lil' bottle of Maker's Mark and a can of Coke.

I've been in love with Maker's ever since. They don't much use Rye to make Whisky down where that stewardess came from. They make corn likker.

I have my own rubber koozie with stapled-on, laminated cut-outs of my ribbons, Popeye, "Vets for KERRY", UTUSN.

There are some trademarked items that are totally FIERCE about locking their images. Popeye was difficult to find. And when I do my Paula ZAHN-Chucky thing, Chucky was just about impossible:

37. Damn! It is going to
have to be mineral water again tonight! I just got home from listening to my kid play in a jazz bar. The waitress came up to me and asked if I was OK, it seems the thingy on the gin bottle did not work and I got one hell of a gin and tonic. Happy, oh so happy so a little water while this wears off! Thank you kind bartender for the bar two nights in a row.
