My child learned how to whistle really well--I'm losing my mind
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 06:29 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
Whistling, whistling, whistling, day and night. Random no-tune tunes, Christmas songs, commercial jingles. Experimenting with different notes, seeing how long she can hold a single note. Runs, interpretive whistling, you name it.

Did I mention that she can whistle really well and REALLY LOUDLY???

I thought she was in her room ASLEEP at one point last night and I was walking down the hallway and heard WHISTLING.

She was in the backyard the other day and we could hear her whistling from INSIDE the house.

No amount of reminders that mom and dad's "ears are tired" helps. She's not *trying* to be annoying, it's just that this fascinating new thing is fun and several minutes of blessed silence goes by and she forgets and launches into a new, loud tune.

We've tried "quiet whistling." No, that's just as annoying.

So we're gritting our teeth and hoping this ends soon. The Great Whistling Summer of 2004.

My God. She's whistling now.

1. I would go insane
for some reason, whistling just sets every nerve on end, even GOOD whistling. It makes me crazy. Good luck.

3. YES!
Thank you for verifying it isn't just me and Mr. Moonbeam. I thought maybe we were just horribly mean. I've tried to even "get into" a few of her tunes. She tries to get me to play "guess which TV show theme song I'm whistling now" and I can't get past two without wanting to claw my face off.

She knows. She tries. But somehow whistling never seems to bother the whistler at all. Didja ever notice that?

5. She is.
She's a very very happy child, thank goodness. Always has been. But I never encouraged her to learn to whistle. She used to only be able to do that weak, half-whistle that people do before they really master it. And that was fine by me.

Ever heard someone whistle seven hours a day?

As for musical stuff, she IS trying out for choir Tuesday...maybe we can turn to singing instead.

4. Yeah, it's a pain in the butt. I remember when my brother John learned
how to whistle. He would even do it in his sleep. That's the truth too. He would sleep walk and whistle, he would just be laying there whistling away. Day, night, whatever. There was no escaping it. He drove everyone crazy.

Thank God he now has false teeth and can't let loose with any more blood curdling eardrum piercing noises, especially when you least expect it.

8. How old is she?
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 06:41 PM by bigannie
Many people whistle and really aren't aware they are doing it.
BUT on the other hand...maybe she has some talent and you should exploit it.

15. She's almost ten.
And she IS a good whistler, but she's a better singer. I'd rather not encourage the whistling! LOL!

10. One of my junior high principals could whistle his ass off
I swear when he'd whistle it felt like he could shatter your fucking eardrums. At lunch the kids would fill up the gym after they ate and he would whistle the start of B-ball games. I swear his whistle was not only louder than an actual whistle but you could hear it outside of the school:hurts: :wtf:

11. Earplugs ...
... you've got a musical, creative child on your hand exploring her gifts. Put in those earplugs and feel lucky she didn't take up the drums.

12. By coincidence, just today I discovered the most irritating thing is
a child who has just learned how to whistle. They don't get bored with it.

That's the problem! You nailed it! I would have gotten SO bored with whistling by now, but SHE never tires of it!

Thanks, that's exactly it.

13. Time to teach her there is a time and place for everything
As well as there really is too much of a good thing.

I am extremely adversely affected by whistling-It gives me a splitting headache. You wouldn't believe how many times I've had to leave stores or restaurants because some rude ass was making that god awful noise.

Believe me, I am a mother as well and I totally understand that you don't want to squash your child's accomplishments. But try to help her control this now before it becomes a very nasty habit.

(Bitch hat off now)

19. Well
to her credit, she doesn't do it anywhere but home. Not at school, not in the grocery store, she saves the torture for us. And it doesn't give us a headache or anything, it just gets tiring.

I just noticed I haven't heard whistling in over an hour. Hallelujah!

You weren't being bitchy at all, I totally hear ya!

24. It's the one thing that can make me become a raving shrew
I've had two incidents that I pretty much lost control and turned into a screaming raving shrew.

About 6 months ago we were having dinner in a fairly nice restaurant that had an open kitchen. The chef whistled non stop. Shortly after our food was served I stood up and quite loudly stated that I couldn't eat at this f...., s.... ass place. Needless to say we haven't (and won't) be going back there. Not because of the whistling but because of my behavior.

About 5 years ago I nearly ripped the lips off a guy who was sitting behind me in a plane who clearly had no clue how ignorant and annoying he was. When I screamed at him, I think I scared most everyone on the plane. Good thing this was pre 911 or I would have been carted off to Gitmo.

It quickly drives me to the point that I become irrational and hostile.

I have one that doesn't whistle... but she started talking INCESSANTLY this summer.

If there is no one to talk TO she talks to herself.

My summer has been the summer of... throw me a rope, so I can hang myself!

Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 09:33 PM by Moonbeam_Starlight
Yes we've gone through talktative phases a few times now. And when I say "talkative" I mean "never stops talking ALL DAMN DAY LONG."

I know you must know what I mean. And yes to the talking to herself, too.

There were times I couldn't even form a though in my head for all the talking.

Fortunately that has eased off a bit. Hang in there! Wait until she learns to whistle!
