if I ever went for a PC..
I would much rather buy and build it myself. AMD procssor for sure, the new 64 bit one, but the graphics card...geez, I'd say a Radeon with no less than 128 MB of Video memory, probably 256...motherbroad would need IEEE1394 (Firewire) USB 2, gigabit ethernet. And most likely a Gib or main memory. It would so cool to be able to say I built THIS mofo of a PC

I think I will someday :-) Meanwhile, I'm drooling over what the son to be shown iMac G5 will look like!

1. yeah, but then there is that whole MS Windows XP thing
or at best, somebody's ill conceived linux distrib with a wannabe Windows interface.

Have done the build your own pc thing, still like my old mac best!

2. Think different, ya librul!
My G4 died a couple months ago and I had to get a new one fast to make a deadline. G5 ROCKS. Also had a Microsnot-enabled PC in which I replaced the motherboard, but now it's a paperweight.

3. If you want Linux, use Nvidia for the video instead.
Drivers are easier to install and actually WORK once installed. ATi's drivers are hard to install, and much like their Windows' drivers, are buggy.

7. Either is a good route.
Building a PC isn't that tough, but requires some patience. Using a Mac is more trouble free, but requires some $$$'s. (I've done both, and am currently typing this on my Mac while trying to rid the PC of virus's and browser hijacking ad-ware and spybots.)

8. don't forget about PCIExpress
Building a computer without it now would invite trouble later ;-).

And be careful with the AMD64 -while the heatspreader removes the problems with damaged dies, the pins are very thin and bend/break easily - and AMD doesn't have the cool warranty Intel has.
